Its a young box turtle. Looks like an Eastern. What area do you live in and was it found in the wild?

I live near Dallas, Texas.. It was found infront of my apartment gate.. Hallway.. Anyone could of stepped on it as it being that small. Plan on releasing it somewhere safer

If you ask anyone they will tell you I’m always the person going around lecturing people to release box turtles back into the wild. However, the chances of three toed box turtles going as far west as Dallas is rather slim. The ornate box turtle may be a fairly common resident though. I would do a quick scan around your area to see if anyone has lost one. But considering how it looked like the previous owner treated it very poorly, I would take it to an animal rescue center.

I agree - sounds like it was someones pet. I would also take it to a rescue, there are turtle rescues or you could find it a home with an experienced keeper.
