 Heat lamp/uv light question

How long should I leave a heat lamp on each day? Also, if I leave a UV lamp on all day will it harm him or should I give him a break from that too? And if I shoud turn it off, should I use another light source or will he be fine in the dark until I turn the UV light on again?

In the wild the sun is out for about 10-12 hours a day. If they don’t want the heat or the sunlight they go for a swim or burrow into their shelter. So as long as the turtle has water to swim in and a few good hiding places you don’t have to worry much, provided the temps are correct through out the day.

OK, according to the other thread, slider..
A constant water temp of 75 is good, but if you need a water heater to do that, then watch his activity, too. If he’s eating a lot but not basking much, turn it down a couple degrees. If you see the opposite, turn it up a few.
The high number is the basking temp. Strip thermometers are not as bad really as a lot of people here make them out to be, but, for checking a basking platform, they are useless. You want an infrared temp-gun, so you can check surface temperatures of any little spot on the basking platform you want to. And also, just to give him a little wiggle-room in case things get hotter or cooler anyway, which they will sometimes, you might want to use a larger basking platform than he actually needs. Then, even if one spot is in the 90s sometimes and one is often in the low 80s, he can figure out how to shift around on there and find his warm spot.
