 Box Turtle Air Travel Help

I grew up with a Box Turtle named Tacky. She’s about 25 years old. We lived in Arizona at the time. I have since got married to a Scottish man and now live in Scotland with my zoo of animals. I will be traveling to Arizona for a wedding with my three year old son, in April. My mother and father are sick of caring for Tacky and I had thought it was impossible to get her sent here on her own. But since we will be on the flight, I am hoping to take her home to Scotland with me.

Now I read that airlines heat their holds about the same as the seating area. That said I also read that the hold can be as much as 5 degrees cooler than the rest of the plane. When we moved from Arizona we transported my dog, two cats and parrot in the holds and they did very well.

I have a plastic carrier that I used for my parrot that is mostly closed off apart from breathing holes. It limited his stress and I think it would work nicely for Tacky. I’d put padding in and stuff so she won’t get shuffled around. I still worry about the length of the flight for Tacky though and the temperatures.

Can anyone advise me?

As my parents have tried to give her away once, I am really hoping this works. After 25 years with us she deserves to stay in the family, ya know?

Cheers,
Alison

You can also use delta dash for the airlines, they deliver reptiles all the time. I would call your airline and see what their policies are.

If I were you I’d try to carry him on board in your carry on bag. That way you know he’s safe. Its not like he is gonna disturb anyone.

Ovbiously you have never been in a plane before and would not know that they scan your luggage and carry-ons using x-rays, not to mention the trained dogs to sniff out food, drugs, and animals.

I know in the case of small dogs (think sub 5lbs or so) you can carry them on a plane. They have to remain under the seat and can not be let out whatsoever. This is how my gf got her dog from a breeder down in TX. You would have to check with the airline specifically though.

Also is there some sort of quarantine pets have to go through when moving internationally.

I was hoping that I could take her as a carry on. I guess I will have to call around. I am not sure what airline I’ll be using yet. If I can take her in the passenger area then I won’t have to worry about her getting to cold in the hull. It would be a great relief. But I had serious doubts about that until I read your reply.

Now I just have to talk my mom into letting me take her. Suddenly she’s all wishy washy about loosing Tacky. This after nearly giving her away to a stranger! It still makes me so furious to think about that!

No worries about quarentine. The UK has gotten rid of that. Now you just need to have a vet check the animal out and make sure they have the right shots. They fill out a Pet Pass and away it goes. Much easier than when I first brought my zoo of animals over. Our dog and two cats had to be in quarentine for 6 months. Thankfully my parrot didn’t have to but it was still a nightmare.

Thanks so much everyone. I’ll check out that link to.

Cheers,
Alison
