are you guys sure it’s not a tortoise because it has the look of a tortoise from the big scaley looking legs if i’m wrong tell me...but look at the front to legs in the first picture.

also i’m not quite sure but it looks like some sort of tortoise ...but also i’ve never seen a box turtle...so i could be wrong.

You have an eastern or western box turtle. It is a girl because i have a box turtle that is a girl that is a little smaller than that. It depends whether you live in the east or west..... i live in the west.!!!! What a cute turtle!!!!

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all there is no such thing as a Western Box Turtle. The term is sometims incorrectly applied to members of the Ornata Species, as in Terrepene Ornata Ornata (Ornate Box Turtle) or Terrepene Ornata Luteola (Desert Box turtle) Both species generally occur west of the Mississippi River, thereby sometimes referred to as "Western".
There are Only two distinct species of box turtle in the U.S. Terrepene Carolina Carolina (Eastern Box Turtle) from which descends the subspecies Florida (Bauri),Gulf Coast(Major),Three toed(Triungus) and Yucatan(Yucatana) And Terepene Ornata Ornata from which descends the subspecies Desert (luteola)
Second... I dont see how anyone can determine the sex of the box turtle in these pictures. There is no way to distinguish eye color. There is no discernable concave in the plastron. And no picture of the location of the cloaca in relation to the margin of the plastron.
Boxturtle1316 i would slow down on the advice til I read a little bit more. The fact that you think their turtle is a female based solely on the fact that the one you have and THINK is a female is smaller than theirs is utterly ridicilous!
But thanks for playing we have some nice parting gifts for you!!!!!!!!

*roles eyes* Com-on dude. Help people out, don’t yell at them and give them the wrong advice. Everything you said backwards would be correct. Telling a female and male box turtle apart by sight is "ridiculously" simple.
And saying western box turtle is every bit as correct as saying eastern box turtle in the categorical realm.

First of all I offered no "advice", I was stating facts, which most of you on here are apparenntly ignorant. What do you mean "everything I said backwards would be correct"? I dont know what you mean by that. Everything I said is 100% correct according to taxanomical nomenclature. That means "scientific names and categorization" for those of you who cant understand big words. Thats pretty much the "categorical realm" that you speak of. The one scientists an biologists use. I dont think you are either.
I still contend that there is no such thing as a Western box turtle! If you google it you will get a pic of an Ornate or a Desert which is a completely different species from the Eastern.
I suggest you go to chelonia . org (no spaces) find the complete taxanomical list. This may help you grasp the difference between the terms "Species" and "Subspecies" You probably wont visit the web site because you are not prepared to discover that you argument is completely illogical and flat out wrong. You would be more comfortable to attack another persons wisdom and experience than to educate yourself. Thank you.
Mike

it seems like u know a lot about turtles and tortisus.if u could help me id appriciate it im going to call the vet that this site links me to but i want at least some info for now.i have 2 red eared sliders and 2 painted turtles i think there eastern. anywat the sliders are about a year or two old and the painted are less than a year tho one is quite bigger than the other.one day i pikced up the smallestone wich is less than an inch long.i picked him up and the bak brim of his shell was soft. i herd about it but i thought of y it was there becouse its been basking a lot. than i came hone and the majority of the soft part was GONE even some that was not soft. maybe it fell off or something b/c the lack of calcium but like i aid its been basking a lot. than i thought one of the sliders wich a a lot bigger than him attacked him.if i could just get your opinion it would help A LOT.

The soft shell is probably due to a calcium deficiency. Look for RepCal calcium powder in you pet store. This can be added directly to the water. Its not really a good idea to house such smaller turtles with larger ones, for that very reason. It is very likely that the little guy was attacked by the larger one. or like you said it could have just fallen off.
The injured turtle needs to get to a vet fast. Infection is likely to set in soon. In the mean time, quarantine him from all the other turtles. You might also want to think about housing the smaller ones from the larger ones from now on.
