Need help identifying!!!! Hi. i found this turtle the other day on my front lawn. at first i thought it was a tortoise, but judging from the other posts, i guess it is a box turtle of some kind. i would really like to identify it. i think it’s a girl. also, i live several miles inland, and their are no ponds near by, so what should i do?

Need help identifying!!!! Well if your in california it is not a wild turtle and do not release it into the wild.... It is a box turtle - looks like a three toed boxie to me, is there only 3 toes on the back feet (but sometimes they do have four). I’d post some flyers for found turtle but don’t say what kind and see if he belongs to anyone. If not and If you don’t want it there is the california turtle/tortoise rescue club that I’m sure will take it for you and find it a great home, or you can keep it, but check your local laws on them :)
heres some good care sites

Need help identifying!!!! Box turtles love to dig and are great at getting out. They will dig at anytime, it doesn’t mean he is hibernating but yes they do hibernate. You really need to know what your doing if you plan on hibernating him though and its best not to hibernate a new turtle until you have had them for a year. Then you will want to research it as much as possible. Is he outside? If its getting cold in your area you will want to bring him in for the winter or at nights if its cold at night and only let him out on nice days.
If he was someones lost pet I’m sure they miss him but if no one claims him I guess you have yourself a new friend :)

Need help identifying!!!! so, i put up signs, but it’s been a while and no one has claimed him, which is odd, since he isn’t native. i don’t want him to hibernate because i read about it online and i haven’t gotten him ready for it, but he HATES coming inside. he claws at the sides of the box, even though i put dirt in it so it feels more like home. it’s not too cold right now, so i let him out in the day, and he’s made a hole by the sprinklers. i’ve learned that 3-toed box turtles like muddy humid climates, so i guess i have to start thinking about making him a home. thanks for your help!
