Our Large Wild Box Turtle. having breakfast

This is "Banana Boy" one of several Box Turtles that live in our yard. He is very old and quite large. The plate he is eating off of is 9 1/2 inches in diameter. He has been in our yard for many years and is easily recognizable by the markings on his head.

This time of the year we see him out and about every morning and I share some banana with him. He absolutely loves banana and we really enjoy having him in our yard.

Hope you enjoy the pictures,

I’m assuming he is a Gulf Coast box turtle due to the large size? I have one as well. The marginal scutes seem a bit flared out, even for Gulf Coasts, which have slightly flared scutes, but if he’s eating and healthy, I guess it’s nothing to worry about!

I agree I think he is a Gulf Coast Box, he is pretty old as we have had him in our yard for a long time, we have been seeing him almost as long as we have been in this house (18 years).

Oh so it’s not a pet? In that case, don’t worry about the flaring of the scutes. Where do you live? That can help narrow down the species. And if you’ve been seeing him for 18 years, there’s a good chance he can still be young. Box turtles are known to pass the 100 year mark.

We live in the Florida Panhandle and if you click on my Profile and photo s you can see some of the other turtles in our yard. There is also a picture of this same turtle from last year mating with a smaller female in our flower bed.
