 New to our RES :)

We just got "MJ" our RES just this past Sunday.
He still seems to be scared of us, he jumps everytime he sees us. We hope that eventually he’ll get used to us.
I just wanted to make sure that we’re doing the right things with him..
We were told he’s a "teenager" from the pet store. He’s about 5 inches.. We have him in a 25 gallon tank. (we know we need to get him a bigger one.)
We bought him a Zoomed filter, food, water conditioner, dock, and a Reptisun 5.0 UVB light.

We know we need to get him a heating lamp.. any suggestions? We usually go to Petco to get his things.

We’ve been feeding him small amounts twice a day. He doesnt seem to like the grapes I chopped up for him.. but has more of a liking to the carrots. He likes his little pellets though. Are we doing this right?

I’ve called Petco a few times, and asked them about his tank. It seems to be going through something called "New Tank Syndrome." It’s cleared up a little bit since Monday.. (we couldnt even see him!!) Now we can see him, and the other side of the tank, but its still pretty cloudy, and it looks green...He also has a white film on him, but it doesnt seem to be bothering him. We also noticed all of the bubbles on the top.. it looks like soapy bubbles. But we used absolutly no soap near him or the tank.
Should we clean the tank, or leave it? Petco told me to leave it.. but I wanted a second, or third opinion. :)

I’m afraid to hold him.. he doesnt seem like he wants to be held. The only time I got to was when we got him and I put him in his tank. Is he going to get used to me?
I heard of people holding their turtles and playing with them and stuff.. he hasnt biten me, or even snapped at me.. but he always looks like he’s going to.

I cant think of anything else to write.. although I’m sure I’ve bored you enough. :)

ANY advice would be great! And thank you!
We want to make sure our RES lives a very healthy life. :)

Ok first of all don’t ask questions at petco. They want to seem like the know what they’re doing and say thier answers confidently but they are all just blowing crap out of thier mouths (no offense to those who work at petco).

You should clean the tank if it is cloudy at all. It might be that if you have a carbon pad in the filter. Just rise the filterpad through and it’ll be good for cleaning your tank.

Your turtle will take about a month to get used to you and I wouldn’t hold him until then unless you absolutely have to.

Just dont ask questions at petco.

Austin

Fill the tank up as much as you can untill its about 4 inches from the screen lid.

Hi Austin :)

Yes, our filter does have carbons in it.
So we need to clean the carbon filter and the tank..

How should we clean his tank? I know we cant use soap, so just water and sponge? We have another tank to put him in for the mean time, how long can he be out of water?

Also, for sanitary and salmonella reasons, where should we clean his tank? We have to bathrooms, one with a tub, another with a shower, and sinks in the kitchen, and two bathrooms.. (obviously, ha!)
Where do you suggest is best?

Is there anything else you suggest we get him?

Food wise, other than the pellets..
And what size tank should we REALLY have?

We kind of figured asking Petco wasnt the way to go, which is why I signed us up for this forum.
Thanks so much for your help! We really appreciate it!! :)

What I do is if you can lift it, take it outside and let it be completely drained. If you have no yard or something like that ( for instance if you live in an apartment) I would pour the water into the tub. You can always scrubb it with disinfectant or something.

It seems to me that everything is in order supplies wise.

You could buy him some collard greens or kale. They do have a good frozen food I used for about year and then they didnt supplie it in my area. It has carrots and shrimp and assorted greens into frozen cubes. Its alittle expensive but it was easy for me cause mine wouldnt eat veggies.

Do not use ice berg lettuce. It is simply just like eating ice. It is like food but has no nutrient in it.

A male red eared slider needs a 55 +

A female needs 75+

He can stay out of water for a while but I wouldnt leave him out for more than an hour while cleanong his tank.

Austin
