Sexing, want to get another uro

I already have a uro, he/she is seven months old. I would like to get another uro (which is a male) but the thing is i would like to konw what gender i have first. I have 2 huge tanks, i was wondering if i could sex the uro i have which i named Josh lol. I would like to have them live together for a few years before the breed, but that would only happen if i had the female. I would have the two tanks ready to go just in case they didnt get along and would monitor them very carefully. Here are some pics to help sex, i tried getting color, pores and head. Which i noticed are the top three indicators. I know probing is a no-no

Well coloration and other factors differ with different species. I’m not an expert, but this looks very close to my Female Mali Uro. The coloration is nearly identical. For female Malis, they tend to be generally brown in color, and the males are black/yellow. Just keep in mind this is not an expert opinion, just an analysis. If this is a Mali, it looks Female, but please listen to the more experienced members on the site, or take her to your local reptile vet. Best of luck!

yes she/he is a mali, i have been trying to compare to pictures and it resembles females, but then i dont wanna just go by coloring, so i know the head shape and pores also helps which is why i added those too. thanks for the info though!

Most uro’s have femoral pores (Benti’s do not, I know!). S/he is awfully young to even consider color as proof. My ornate is probably 1 1/2 years old and just starting to show shades of color. What size enclosure is "huge"? Why do you think breeding is a direction to go? Are you prepared if it does happen? Do you realize how few eggs come to fruition? If you were to get another, you would want one about his age. Then you’d have two that you aren’t sure of the sex. It is possible, with better pictures, that Uro_fan, or one of the breeders could tell you the sex at this age. Every body else it would just be a guess!

Sexing, want to get another uro

huge as in 48x24x24, the two uro’s would be around the same age(about a month or two difference), i know that only a few eggs come out, and its difficult to get a clutch to hatch, i am prepaired, i would purchase an incubater and such, i really want my uro to have another play buddy so i wouldnt induce brumation to get them into breeding state even though it might occur naturally. I know the sex of one (male) i want to sex mine before i add to males together and they rip eachother apart. Ive done research and have monitored this website for the last 8 months know and have a good sense of things.

You do not want to let some one probe your uro . It is dangerous and not an accurate way to sex a Uro anyways . Is this your first Uro I assume ? If this one is only 7 months old then you must not have had it for long . I would suggest waiting awhile before getting another one . Gain experience with the one you have now before taking on a second one . Uro’s should be housed separately in my opinion other than to mate .They do not get lonely or need companionship , they are solitary animals . It is very difficult to accurately sex such a young Uro .Many times even a male and a female will end up fighting .Since it takes 3-4 years for one to become sexually mature , why rush ?

Also, regardless where you are getting the second uro, you will need to keep them quarantined for at least three months. Do you have another complete set up for the male? You will need to keep the second set up ready after that, as it is often hard for inexperienced owners to see intimidation between the uro’s. Sometimes they just fight, but too often one keeps the other away from the food, or afraid to come out. It may chase and bite the other uro. They aren’t playing! Uro’s are solitary except for mating. A uro can take chunks of skin before you can react. The two uro’s together is definitely for your pleasure, not the uro’s. So don’t even consider another animal until you have two 48x24x24 set ups running with the right temps. You will just be adding stress to an already stressful situation. And uro’s can lay many eggs at once. You might have read my opinion on new breeders endangering the females and killing the unborn hatchlings. I, personally, think it is irresponsible.

well like i said sahells mom, i have to tanks up and ready. i have seen alot of posts, read and kept up so i have a good understanding of things, also like i said i would moniter to see how they got alone, also you cant tell wether im irresponsible or not, you cant stop me from being one if i was anyway. im doing my research asking questions to learn. this is the most pushy and negative forum to people who havent had uros for years. BTW i never said anything about breeding, i was only checking capability of the uros and if it would work out.

what i meant was, i wouldnt make them breed initially, by the time they would be able to id have years under my belt of experience with my uros, id rather have them down and get to know them because i think about breeding

Hard to tell but it looks male from the ventral . too young for color to matter. Being it is so young, I really can’t tell for sure, but I would guess male.

We are not being negative just honest . I am curious exactly what do you mean by two huge tanks ? If you have done the research ,don’t mind a pet that you can not hold much, have the money for veterinary care if needed and the proper set ups ,then we have nothing against you getting two Uro’s .Have 50 if you can take good care of them .

I just wanted to add that I do not see where you get that anyone was being negative . When you ask about sexing such a young Uro and having two live together for several years before attempting to mate them , that tells experienced Uro owners right off that you do not have experience with Uro’s and have not done much research on them or you would not have asked the question in the first place . We were simply responding honestly to your question . I guess you did not like some of the answers and took them as being negative when they were simply honest , responsible answers .

Two more things and this may also sound negative to you - Uro’s do not need or want "play buddies", like I said they are solitary reptiles .And you would not want to put them into brumation even to breed them . It is not necessary and can be harmful . I think you need to do more research before even thinking about breeding uro’s .

Sexing, want to get another uro

Vicc,

This animal cannot be sexed with any accuracy from the photos you have posted. As the coloration and pores are typically not pronounced enough at this size to differentiate gender, it is difficult for breeders to even attempt to sex this size maliensis. Even with years of experience in handling the species and hatchlings, most breeders will only offer a ‘best guess’ at gender at this age/size and often base it on the comparison of pores and hemipenal bulges in a ‘group’ of animals. You might as well flip a coin at this point if you want a guess on gender.
