 Checking in on the ornates at the Bronx Zoo

I could not resist abandoning my friends to run into the reptile house at the Bronx Zoo








If you look closely at the first picture you will see the 2nd uro basking high up on the back wall.
Very interesting substrate, but I didn’t have time to ask a keeper about it... Will try to call and get the details. Very dry, crumbly red, clay substrate.
I wish the enclosure had been brighter, but overall it was a great improvement from a few years ago! Previously the pair were in a more shallow enclosure with dry grasses to climb on, but cramped with no tight caves (that I could see anyway). Happy to see they have more room to roam, and a more enriching environment.

You can go to my flickr set to see a couple of pictures from summer 2005, when they were new acquisitions. (Before they got these two they had an egyptian surrendered to them that didn’t survive MBD.)

I was in the Bronx two weeks ago and was going to take my wife to the BX Zoo but didn’t have time. Very cool to see their doing much better.

Unfortunately I didn’t have time to measure I had a tired and bored toddler pressuring my group!
The uros looked to be around 6 or 7 inches. I estimate that the enclosure was about 3 feet across and about 18 inches deep and tall.

The zoo got these two as juvies from a from a breeder, and they looked healthy, if small, back in summer 05. It was good to see that they have put on a healthy amount of pudge.

I talked to a kid for a few minutes about what they are like, and what properly keeping them entails. His dad was pretty horrified by the expense involved in getting them set up and keeping them healthy!
