Any tricks to getting them to eat greens?
Hi, i just bought my first Mali Uro and im just wondering... is there any real tricks to getting him to eat his greens (collard mustard kale etc.) cuz he seems to only want the bright dandelions i’ve been treating him with? Also, how often are you supposed to let him soak up a little water cuz i’ve been studying up on this stuff and there is a variety of recommendations. Thanks alot guys!

Any tricks to getting them to eat greens? You should read through the care sheets. Shouldnt be any water in the tank unless they are hatchlings or just laid a clutch of eggs. Also, staple diet should be escarole, endive, chickory, bok choy. you can add in some shredded carrots or peas or green beans as treats. make sure the dandelions your feeding does NOT have any pesticides (ie. dont pick them off a random lawn or near the street)

Any tricks to getting them to eat greens? Once you get the staple greens, escarole, endive, chickory, bok choy etc... you might try sprinkling them with Bee Pollen granules (bought at GNC and places like that) maybe once a week to help stimulate the Uro’s appetite. Other than that, I would suggest stop feeding the dandilion flowers for a while until s/he eats the greens.
They are a treat. Mine don’t get any except on the weekends and only after they have eaten their greens ... kinda like kids and dessert ! LOL

Any tricks to getting them to eat greens? i got a trick, i do it everytime i give my uro a pea. Take the greens and cut it into like a 1 inch x 1 inch sqaure or something small, wrap 1 pea in it with the end sticking out. and then offer the pea facing the uro, and make sure they bite the greens with it. sometimes i pinch by the pea so he doesnt see the rest of the greens and he will continue to eat the whole thing like he doesnt notice the green. its prob one big pea. he eats his greens though, but i also try to squeeze other greens he doesnt eat by tricking him. i could get pictures up later if you wish

Any tricks to getting them to eat greens? Please do some research on what the proper diet is for Uros... Collard greens can be used occasionally as a supplement, but not all the time. Don’t ever feed broccoli, spinach, or kale. The greens listed above are what the main diet should consist of, including dandelion greens also (but make sure that they are 100% pesticide free!) It took me a while, but I’ve finally talked my DH into NOT pulling up dandelions and since I garden organically, I feed the dandelion greens as a staple food along with the endive/escarole (a.k.a chicory), a bit of bok choy a few times a week, shredded squash or zucchini, a couple of lentils, peas, or lima beans, dried alfalfa or timothy grass, and a pinch of bee pollen once every week or two. They also love edible flowers like dandelion flowers, hibiscus, rose petals, squash blossoms, nasturtium (leaves and flowers).
Hope that helps some with ideas on feeding. You could try cutting up a dandelion flower so that it’s hundreds of tiny yellow petals, instead of a whole flower, and mixing that in with the proper greens. That way it would most likely have to eat the greens in order to get to the dandelion petals :)

Any tricks to getting them to eat greens? Follow Doublemoms advice and feed a good diet , do not handle your Uro , make sure you have the proper size enclosure , proper lighting and temperature gradient . Many times a Uro will not eat because the temps are to low , the cage is not lit up properly , and because he is afraid . It can take months for a uro to get acclimated to his new surroundings . You might also cover 3 sides of the cage with aquarium back ground or brown paper bag ( if you have not already ) to give him a more secure feeling . Also have at least two low hides , one at each end of the enclosure .
