 New uro

I got a uromastyx at the hamburg expo. Can any one tell me what he is. His hot side his 98 cool side is 88. The basking temp is 120 degrees. I have been feeding him dandelion greens, split peas, lentils, collard grees, mustard greens, and romaine lettuce. His substrate is eco earth. The dimensions of the tank are 4ft wide x 18 deep x 22 high. He is about 6 to 7 in. He has about 3 hides. Can anyone tell me if i am missing anything.

He is a Saharan, looks to be a male but a belly picture would give us a better idea. Everything sounds pretty good, maybe cut the mustard greens and romaine lettuce and add escarole and endive.

Also get a fecal sample to the vet as soon as you can, more then likely is a wild caught Uro and many have parasites, defiantly rather safe then sorry, it is relatively inexpensive as well.

You might measure him, he seem awfully red for 6 to 7 inches. Usually they don’t show color quite that early. Also try bumping your basking temp up to about 135 at the hottest point. And if he really is only 6 inches STT length, he should be on paper towels. After 7" he needs to be on a DRY substrate, like sand. I think that eco earth stuff is supposed to hold moisture, which you don’t want. His humidity should be down around 30-40%, no higher. What are you measuring the temps with? Digital thermometers work best, and they are pretty cheap at Lowe’s or Wilmar. One for each end. No soaking, no bugs, stuff like that. You can read the forum & get the correct diet & stuff. Good luck!!

are you using any UVB lights? by the looks of your pictures there are 3 lights there, just want to make sure you do have UVB :)

side note: it seems like everybody posting reads at least 1 care sheet and mentions good things, but there is never mention of UVB....

Getting a UVB light today my local pet store didn’t have any so i am going to petsmart. i have read many caresheets. On the hot side i have a dial gauge and on the cool side i have a digital gauge. He is 7 inches in body lenthg. With his tail he is 11 inches. The basking is over a peice of slate wich probably ups the temps past 120. How do i get it to 135 i am using a 150 wat light bulb. I believe he is captive bread but im not a 100 percent sure because the guy sold me it breeds reptiles and im not sure if he said he breeds uros. What vet can i take him to to get feces sample done. Eco earth holds humidity but if its dried out it doesn’t. I will get him the other food u told me to get. He doesn’t seem to be eating the beans. Im using eco earth because reptiles can digest it. A couple more question:
Can i put plants in or will i raise the humidity too much?
Can they eat fruit if so what kinds?
Can they be tamed because he always runs away from me and tries to get out when i hold him.
Are you supposed to put calcium dust o their foods?

That has to be the brightest female red Saharan I have ever seen! That cream coloured belly is usually a pretty clear indication of a female, unless you have some sort of crazy mimic - ShyBoy has a Mali mimic.

I would hold off for now till she gets on a good routine, is eating good, and has also been cleared by a vet for parasites and any other health issues, this will limit the stress on her. Some uros will allow handling and some don’t, but after she is acclimated to her surroundings theres really not a problem handling her everyday just dont keep her out of the heat very long.

While some uros will tolerate handling, it isn’t really advisable, as it tends to stress them out, on top of cooling them off. They really are more observation-type pets. I definitely wouldn’t recommend handling everyday. Instead of holding my uro, I hand-feed her everyday. However, it can take a couple of months for them to acclimate. During this time, you really shouldn’t handle your uro at all, unless you need to take her to the vet.

To check for parasites, you will need to take a FRESH fecal sample to a good reptile vet...put it in a baggie, and you can refrigerate it for up to 24 hours, I believe, to keep it fresh enough. If you search, there should be a list of recommended reptile vets and their locations somewhere on the forum.

Remember they will eat them, so if you do this make sure they are NOT toxic whatsoever. Some people put plastic plants in if at all. As for Humidity, I believe I read a post that said it shouldn’t be higher than 30% but I’m not sure.

Fruits - Blueberries, mango, melons - all washed very good and in very little amounts. My uros won’t touch fruit.

Uro’s are wild animals, especially if they are Wild Caught. I believe the best you can achieve is that they will eat from your hands. If you want to calm them down and have them get used to you, sitting by their enclosure when they are out and active so they get used to to is something you can do. One of my Uros will come right to the window when I come up to say "Hi" but the other three just look at me like I’m crazy talking to lizards. LOL

I personally don’t use a calcium supplement but maybe 1 time per every couple weeks. It shouldn’t necessary if they are getting the staple greens like endive, escrole, dandelion leaves with stuff like bok choy, grated squash & zucchini thrown in as treats every couple of days. But if you do use the calcium supplement, use it very sparingly, maybe 1 time per week.

Sand causing impaction is a possibility, but then again, almost any substrate except papertowels, newspaper and reptile carpet COULD cause impaction. Just don’t use CALCIUM SAND !! Pet stores like to push this crap on new owners and its deadly to Uro’s.

I only feed my Uro’s one time per day, in the morning. And yes, they like to drag their food around alot ! LOL I also hand feed them a dandelion flower or pansy flower 1 time per week on the weekends as a treat.

I’m in no way an expert, but these are my own experiences and opinions. There are many good care sheets out there, you can do a search here or on google for some care sheets.

Good Luck with your new Uro !
