 Help not eating

ok i dont have a uro but we have one at work that is not eating

we have had him for over a week he is about 5-6 in

temps are about 80 on the cool side 90 on the rest basking is about 100 that is all the higher we can get it but we have ordered bigger bulbs that will make it higher

he is terrified and hides all day

we try feeding him in the morning and evening

we feed mustard greens,sweet potatoe,zuchini,apple,grapes

we have taken him to the vet and he has tested negative for parasites

we just dont know why he isnt eating

he is sooo scared and he will hides in the same spot all day and night (not there at night but he is always in the same spot)

do you think it is just he temp or is it something else?

we are all really worried about him

please give me some suggestions so i can tell my manager

thanks

Your basking temp needs to be around 130 degrees, that is more then likely your problem they need to be nice and warm to move around and be active, what size of enclosure is he in? I would also add escarole, endive and bok choy to the diet for daily greens.

ok i will tell them that about the other greens

the tank is about a 20g maybe a little more (25)

like i said we are getting bulbs in this week we cant use the ones you buy in the store b/c the socket uses shorter bulbs so they wont fit

should we put in a uth to help with heat?

i told them not to order it b/c we could not make it hot enough but they didnt listen

just like i told them not to get the crested gecko unless they took the light out b/c it is a little too warm for them

but they dont understand reptiles

 Help not eating

Well, it’s most likely not moving around or eating because it’s way too cold, but unfortunately to get the correct temperature for it to be active and eat in that size of enclosure, you’ll end up cooking it because you cannot possibly get a gradient of 130 degrees basking surface down to a cool side of 80 in that size of tank. The very very very minimum tank size that you can get remotely decent temps is a 40-gallon breeder. The way it is now, it will either starve and dehydrate because it’s not warm enough to eat and digest, but if you get it hot enough for basking, it will eventually dehydrate because it will have nowhere to go to cool down to regulate it’s body temperature. Sorry to be blunt, but the situation isn’t good no matter how you look at it.

Is there any way you could move it into a 40-gallon breeder? That might give it a chance. And any time a Uro is moved or changes environment, it stresses the poor things out and they tend to hide much more than usual, so be prepared to not see much activity for a while, even if you get the tank size and temperatures corrected. Hope this helps out some.

Andi

what kind of Uro is it? 40 gallon breeder may not be enough for some species. also, are you using UVB?

might be more helpful; if you fill out the ’please read before posting’ and make sure theres nothing else you are missing or need to change to help your Uro
