 Mali not eating

Hello,
My uro is not eating for 2 days now. I have an apointment with a reptile vet monday. What can i do for now to help him not getting dehydrated. When I called the vet, he said to give him gatorade with a serynge, but I don’t like this idea .

1) How long have you owned the animal . 7 months

2) Dimensions of the enclosure you are using. Measure it- do not guess or give gallon size. 36x18x18. My new enclosure 48x24x24 is here but I am letting it dry for 2 weeks now

3) Species (if known), length, and weight of the animal . mali , 6 inches long, 40 g

4) Listing of all animals kept in the enclosure referred to in the post. only him

5) Basking spot temperature and how that temperature was measured 115-120 F IR temp gun

6) Temperature throughout the rest of the enclosure (warm and cool areas) and how these temperatures were measured e.g. digital thermometer, stick on dial thermometer. Provide the nighttime temperatures as well. 95-100 hot side, 85 cool side, night 72-75, digital thermometer

7) Acknowledge whether you are using a UVB bulb and if so, the brand, age of bulb, and distance from the bulb to the uromastyx . 10.0 repti glow, inside the enclosure, 7 months of use, 12 inches from the bottom

8) Diet items being fed and how often each item is fed . Staple green: endive, escarole, dandelion. squash, zucchini, mangos, bok choi, bee pollen, zupreem fruit blend flavor, finch seed all those once a week

9) List of the supplements being used, how much is used, and how often the supplement is used.
rep cal calcium phosphorus free, repcal herptivite multivitamins once a week or less

10) Type of substrate (cage bottom material). If this is sand, state whether it is calcium sand .
paper towel. I was waiting to put him on playsand in the new enclosure

11) Describe your animal’s daily routine. When it exits the hide, when it retreats for the night, how long it is usually out throughout the day, is it active during this time, how much time does it spend sitting on the basking spot…. lights on a 7 in the morning, he is usually out by 8:30. He explore, bask, explore, eat, etc. He was very active. go to sleep around 6, lights out at 7:30 in the evening.

12) Describe your animal’s appetite. He had a great appetite since the winter is over. For 2 months now, I feed him twice a day.

13) Describe any unusual behaviors you are seeing or any recent changes in behavior. Also note whether any recent modifications have been made to this animal’s environment. e.g new enclosure, move to another room, new heat bulb.... no changes in his environnement. He is sleeping for 2 days now. not moving, eyes closed. Yesterday, I was able to attrack him out of his hide with zuppreem, I did not see any visual problems.

14) Describe how often this animal is handled and the type of handling. I do not handle him, just to weight him or cleaning

15) State whether the animal has been to a vet, when that was, and whether the animal was diagnosed with a medical condition. Also state whether the uromastyx has ever had a fecal check. If so states when the fecal check was done, what was found, and if medication was prescribed.
never went to a vet, I have an appointment monday.

Thank you for any advice. sorry for my bad english, I usually speaks french ;)

It may just be a slow couple of days for him. He might be getting ready to shed. Has the weather been particularly cold the last few days? You might double check his temperatures throughout the cage - make sure nothing’s off. The vet visit is a good idea since he hasn’t gone before, but be aware that the stress of the visit will probably make him hide for a while longer even if nothing is wrong with him.

Do you have UVB meter? If not, you should replace your UVB - fluorescent UVB lamps should be replaced every 6 months, since the output decays to useless levels well before the light burns out.

And your English is fine - I wouldn’t have thought anything odd about your English if you didn’t say.

thanks el toro,

Yes, the weather has been cold for a few days. I have a CHE for the night. I do not have a uvb meter, but i have already a new fluorescent for my new tank. I will replace it today.
He had a full shed 3 weeks ago.
What bothers me is that he suddenly stopped eating. Monday he was fine, very active, eating, basking etc. But tuesday he sleeped all day long in his hide. I try to give him an hibiscus flower with no chance.
Maybe he is sensitive to weather changes...
I can’t wait to see the vet.

thanks again

Welcome o the forum . Your set up sounds okay . You might try feeding him a few cut up seedless grape’s , mangos or cantalope to help hydrate him . They are sweet so he might eat a little .If hes been healthy so far a few days ofot eating should not harm him . Hopefully hes just about to shed . I notice that you use a stick on thermoeter . Tey are not accurate . You might want to get another digital one . I use one at each end of my tank .So double check your temps .Keep us posted on how things go at the vet .

I, also, think it is either a shed issue, or your temps aren’t high enough! Mine don’t eat much and do hide before a shed. They do eat SOME. But if the temps drop for whatever reason, they won’t move. It can only drop a very few degrees. These guys like it HOT! Recheck your basking temps ~ make sure it is 120-135 or 140. Varible degrees, meaning part is at 120 and goes up to at least 135 at the hottest point. Check you ambient temps too. We have had really warm weather, then suddenly it got cold again for a couple of days. They were out less, even with my temps up. Confused like the rest of us I think!
And, yes, your English is better than mine!!! (I don’t speak French!)

Thanks everyone for your replies,

Skullkeeper: I use digital thermometers and a pe2 temp gun.
I also wanted to say that the humidity is 31% right now. very constant. I am at home for a few weeks now ( I broke my arm this winter) and I checked the temps each day.

I will try some grapes today. Yesterday I weight him : 42 g now.

I notice last week he was going to the bathroom each day, sometimes twice a day. Before he was going 1 or 2 times a week. the stools were not soft .

Also this morning he was basking very early. I tried to hand feed him with no luck.

The vet tell me to give him gatorade. What do you think?
Thanks again, merci ;)
