There she is! So I decided to get one afterall. The pet store offered some fantastic deals on several of the items I needed at very good prices. I did spend a lot of money to get the basics but it was well worth it. She’s currently in a very big 70 gallon terrarium. I got one of those nifty mercury vapor bulbs, 160 w so the basking rock is pretty warm. The air temperature is about 100 degrees to 110 degrees depending on the time of day on the hot side. The rock is warmer, I don’t have a temp gun to get an accurate reading but it seems to be about 120 degrees or so when I place a thermometer there. I’m trying to locate some nice dark flagstone in the meantime, right now she’s on a piece of granite that I took out of my garden and gave a good wash, I want to try and get something I can elevate more so she can have a warm side hide as well.

She’s NOT tame, she has quite the attitude when I put the hand in my tank, lunging at me, hissing etc. I’ve left her alone for the most part except for cleaning and feeding twice to three times a day. She seems happier just to watch me than having my close company and I’m fine with that.

She’s been munching on spring mix dusted lightly with calcium powder, some young iguana pellets, a little bit of insta oats, strawberries raisins and dried hibiscus flowers (I’m not able to find fresh ones available yet). I’ve tossed some random veggies in there as well, bell peppers and bean sprouts and peas. I’m still trying to get a feel for what she likes.

Everything seems to be going very well. I had some complications setting up my light timer but that’s fixed now. She sleeps at the cold side of the tank, there’s some ambient heat coming off the brick wall that the side of the tank is against that she seems to like (south facing wall, I live in the desert so it gets nice and toasty).

Hrm, she pooped. Exciting, isn’t it? Reminded me of bird poo.

Is there any advice as far as gaining trust goes to get her a little less freaked out when my hand goes into the tank to do my daily stuff? It would be nice to be able to hold her sometime but I’m not pushing my luck with that happening any time soon. I’d be happy to just see her calm when I’m trying to tidy up for her.

She is very cute, that green is very pretty. However, I wouldn’t really count on holding her all that much...uros tend to be more of observation pets, instead of hold me pets. To get him/her more used to you, you can just sit next to the tank when you are home. Also, instead of holding, try handfeeding. It is a really good "bonding experience" that provides a nice alternative to holding. While she wouldn’t at first, my girl now eats from my hand everyday
