Uro_fan How long do you think I should wait to get a second uro. Also can a saharan (or ornate)and mali be kept together in one cage? Any help would be great.

Uro_fan RCB, My recommendation would be to wait until you have had enough experience keeping a uromastyx prior to purchasing a second one. Once you have had some experience (in my opinion a year or more) with uromastyx husbandry and you get to know the time and money that it involves for proper maintenance, diet and upkeep- then I suggest you think about purchasing a second one. Do not forget that within this time frame you will need to save up to purchase a large enough enclosure to house two animals. I do not think that it would be wise to intentionally mix species and would suggest that you go with the opposite sex of the same species you have now. As many husbandry related illnesses take a while to surface, the year or so experience will give you an indication whether you are going in the right direction. If your uromastyx is apparently healthy a year down the road and has continued to grow in length and weight during that time, then I would think about a second uro if that is your desire. You asked for my opinion- this is it.

Uro_fan Thank You. As always your knowledge is greatly apprieciated. The only reason I asked about mixing sub-species is because frocto has a saharan and mali in one enclousure if i’m not mistaken. Anyway I was just curious.

Uro_fan Heya RCB, actually I don’t anymore, while they didn’t fight, would eat, sleep and bask together at times we caught my Mali charging the geryi and biting. Going by Uro_fan’s info and our observations of how our lizrds interact we think the Geryi (Amidallah), is actually a Han Solo, (ok ok, I know I’m getting nuts with the Star Wars names, but our Mountain Horned Dragons are named from Egyptian mythology and history, our Bearded Dragons are Lord of the Rings based and our Tortoises are European history.) For the time being Yoda is by himself, in a few weeks we are thinking of putting our newer female Mali (HOPEFULLY a female) together. Before I attempted this if you can find the old posts Uro_Fan clarified this isn’t something you want to go out and purposely do. I tried it because I was sent a Geryi instead of a Mali and was hoping I could keep all 3 in one cage. Now my yellow niger has his own nice large cage. Trent

Uro_fan Frocto was accidentally sent the wrong species of uromastyx so his choice in housing two separate species was not actually intentional. Once he had the two different uromastyx, he attempted to try introducing the two. Although we are uncertain whether it is a species compatibility problem, a same sex issue, or just a territorial individual, we do not know for sure but housing these two animals together does not seem to be working very well for Frocto right now and he has separated them. I am not saying that it (housing two sep species) cannot be done, I just think that your odds of success increase if you stick with the opposite sex of the same species you already have.
