 Building material and subs.

Hi everyone. It’s been a long time. Pogo’s been growing like a weed and looks nothing like that little skinny lizard we brought home over 4 yrs ago.

I’ve been thinking about having a new tank built for her since I can’t seem to find anything appropriate on the market. I’m thinking 3 sided wood with hinged door at the front. A stationary screen for the top where the lights sit but what should I put as the bottom? She scratches wood pretty good with her nails so I don’t really want wood. I’ve thought of putting slate pieces on the bottom but her nails can get caught between the tiles. I don’t know how to attach wood to glass without glue which I don’t think it’s a good idea given the heat. Any ideas?

I’ve also been using millet seeds but Pogo slips on it. What’s the latest on sand for a bigger Mali? I would like to try something new and safe if there’s something new on the market.

Sorry to come back with all these questions but I know you’re all here for me. Right? ;P Thanks in advance.

PG, Skullkeeper & I were just PMing about where you went a week or so ago!! (About where all the guys have gone!!).

What about melamine, that white "plastic" covered wood. We were going to make Sahel’s entire enclosure out of it, even bought it! But it is SOOOO heavy, we were afraid we could never move it!! So we made the bottom out of the melamine, so it washes easy, he can’t scratch it up, and I feel it can be sanitized better than regular wood. We screwed on wooden sides, made a "picture frame" to frame in the sliding glass inserts, and we put the top on hinges, just so we can get in easier. I have to admit, we don’t open it, but we can if we need to! Our top is 1/4" wire, which I can cover in the winter. It has worked out well for, what 3 + years. I will be making the next one a little different, but would sure like them to stack somehow!! I would rather have them 6 feet high, than 8 feet across.

Good to have you back on the forum!! You will see it has changed a good bit!! Don’t wait so long to come back!! Oh, and post a picture of Pogo. Bet she is all grown up now!!

Welcome back PG.

All of my enclosures have finished plywood bottoms and none of them are worn out. Even the Bearded Dragon enclosure which is over 5 years old and the bottom is like new. I applied about 3 coats of Behr water base sealer. We wash the bottom of the enclosures once a quarter with vinegar and water and like I said it still looks great. The same goes with the walls. Their in great condition. I’ve changed the 3/4" plywood for 1/2" to make the enclosures lighter.

Post updated pics of Pogo.

Thanks for the great idea. Isn’t the plastic glued onto the wood though? You don’t find any problem with the high heat? I’m so glad you mentioned winter so maybe a partial solid top/lid. Great pic!

I’ll post a photo of Pogo as soon as I catch her. She’s really quite a character now. She loves her blueberries and when she sees a hand, she goes wild. It’s the only way I can get her to crawl out of her cave when I want her to. A handful of blueberries!

Thanks for the welcome back. It’s nice to find familiar names still on here.

I’ve always understood that we shouldn’t use any material that’s been treated due to the hot temp so it’s plywood and sealer not chemically treated? I like the idea of plywood if it’s doable. I also like the sliding glass front idea. I’ll have to hit Home Depot to see if they have anything prefab. What are you using for substrate these days?

Most of us are sticking to washed play sand. Seems to have less problems with mature uro’s. Millett still has the "overeating" problem. Which ever you choose, it should be only 1/2" deep. You should go back in the archives and see if you can see Shyboy’s new enclosure! It is really beautiful & I think he has posted a diagram.

I would think plastic emits more fumes under high heat yet they’re very popular (Vision, Animal Plastic).
