Re: My Mali stopped eating
I have a 4 year old Mali that I’ve had since it was a hatchling and this last week he stopped eating. I noticed he wasn’t eating when he refused his favorite food, wild dandelion flowers. The flowers are not sprayed with pesticides and I rinse them thoroughly before feeding. He usually goes crazy for them but this past week, he just looks at them licks his lips and walks away. He also seem a lot more lethargic than usual. I was afraid of him dehydrating so I gave him a hot water soak this evening and dried him off well. Also I have been feeding him his regular romaine, spring mix and legumes which he is refusing as well. Any suggestions? When should I bring him to the vet?
Thanks,
Danielle

Re: My Mali stopped eating One thing I’d suggest is to stop feeding romaine lettuce, which is good for hydrating, but really has very very little nutritional value at all. The staple greens for Uros, which are much more nutritious and better for them, are endive, escarole, and dandelion greens, with a little bit of bok choy or collard greens rotated through once every week or two.
Do you know exactly what is in the spring mix you have been feeding? May of those mixes have chard, spinach, and other things in them that are not good for Uros at all.

Re: My Mali stopped eating Stirwin does this a lot. I think sometimes they also get bored with certain foods. They need variation. Have you ever used anything else to entice him to eat? I vary it up by giving my uromastyx raw organic sunflower seeds (not inside of the shells, of course), bee pollen granules, and some calcium powder. He loves all of them, and so if I sprinkle it into his food, he may accidentally eat his escarole or collard greens.
It may not be that your uromastyx is sick or anything. Just try to vary it up, and find out what he likes now. After a while, I would go back to feeding him some wild dandies, and see if he’s interested again. Who knows.... he might just be picky, like Stirwin. (He does this all of the time to me. Now, he’s really not interested in the dandelions. It might also have to do with how sweet the dandelions are at the moment.)

Re: My Mali stopped eating Danielle,
There may not be anything wrong with your Mali. Pogo stops eating and hide when she sheds, or in the process of shedding. The temp could be the other reason. I’m guilty to say I don’t vary her diets very much and in 4 1/2 yrs she’s still eating mostly endive which she prefers. Another thing she loves is blueberries and lentils are fine by her too.

Re: My Mali stopped eating It may not be anything, but it may be something (hows that for a vague answer). Someone here on the forum wrote in about a uro that wasn’t eating, and it ended up being impacted. Rodan will sometimes go for a few days without eating, as do probably most uros. So now that you know that it is not unheard of, and most probably nothing at all, you just need to watch him closely for signs that something else might be wrong. No reason to panic...just keep an eye out.

Re: My Mali stopped eating thanks for all of your input....he’s acting fine and is still plump but i love my georgie so i’m very careful with him. as far as diet he always has dried lentils, peas and birdseed and the greens i buy an assortment, the spring mix is typical spring mix but i pick out the spinach.
i feel so much better.thanks again!
