What is the best substrate for a baby uromastyx (5 inches)

I have just recently purchased a baby uromastyx, and I have had a few questions. hopefully you guys can help me out. the first question i have is what kind of substrate would you use for a 5 inch uromastyx. Right now i am using papertowels that i have torn up. Before the papertowels I was using reptile sand which is red and much larger than childs play sand. should i stick with that? Also is it normal for him to sleep all the time in and out of his cage or is there something wrong. When i reach into pet him he wakes up and runs around for a few minutes and then goes back to bed. All the temperatures are perfect (mid 80’s on the cool side, and 115 on the warm side.) Thanks a lot!

Hi Joe and welcome. First off, don’t shred up the paper towels. Their is an off chance he/she can swallow the towel and the towel can get wrapped up in something, not sure how likely that is but just layers of paper towels on the bottom should be fine.
On the sand, ABSOLUTELY NOT!, now you will hear many things on this, for and against, read some older posts and you will get the idea on sand. Not sure if JOANAVOKES has posted her impaction surgery pics here but on the bearded dragon board it was very graphic and convincing as why to not use sand.
As far as his behavior goes, I can’t help ya much there, haven’t had my Uro’s along time, but I have 3 now, and all 3 have different attitudes. One loves to run around and interact with us, one has his moments but mostly prefers to hand out basking, the other, has no use for humans as far as I can tell.
Hope that helps:)
Trent
