 Herpstat ND questions. Jbreddawg?

Hey, me again.
Could you please tell me what kind of temp gun you have? I have a Mastercraft bought at a hardware store. It was actually quite expensive. When the probe was in from my Herpstat ND (HND) for about an hour, it read that the basking area was way colder (101) than my temp gun (127-137) read. Is my gun a crappy one is my question. Crap, here goes the HND again, beeping madly at me. Argh, I WILL GET THIS RIGHT!!! I lowered the lamp a tad too much and the temp shot up so I lifted it again and it seemed to get closer to what I wanted until ... the lamp went out since it was nighttime. Now I am keeping my eye on the nighttime temps. In a few hours I should know how off I was with those, too. I’m a little frustrated, yet determined. It’s all for the good of my beloved pet.
Thanks for any info.
Sophie

Another HND question. If the probe is in the basking area under the CHE and it reads 77F at 60%, what about the other areas. The thermostats actually came with batteries and it shows that it is closer to 68F when you are not under the CHE. Is this normal? Is nighttime temp always measured under the heat? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

The temp gun is measuring surface temperatures, and the thermostats probe is measuring ambient air temperatures. 127-137 sounds good for basking temps. Just don’t let it get too much higher. Hope this helps

127-137is good for the temp gun or probe? The two were showing me very different things. Mind you, I only lowered the lamp a little and it made a significant difference.

The temp gun is the only accurate way to test basking temperatures. If you are reading 127 -137 steady you are doing fine on basking temps. You really don’t want to go over a 140 tempgun reading. Mine enjoy basking anywhere from 110 all the way up to about 138. They usually use the 110-120, but will get on the higher temperatures to warm up quickly. What is your herpstat controlling? If you have the probe for it under a basking site it will keep kicking off. The best way to use it is to put the probe away from your lighting so that it keeps the overall ambient air temps up.

Sorry, I dont have much time before work. I’ll explain better when I get home.

It will take hours for the temps to level out . you just have to set it and forget about if for a long time.
Also, I have my herpstat probe taped right to my basking rock "I’ll get a picture later"
My IR gun was bought from reptile basics and measures exactly the same as the herpstat.
I’ll write more tonight .

 Herpstat ND questions. Jbreddawg?

Thanks a lot to everyone.
I have been playing with the hight of my lamp to adjust the basking spot. The readings I get are now quite a bit closer together. The nighttime temp seemed good, no beeping. But this morning!!! Beeping galore. Before my shower, after my shower, while I was preparing the food, AHHHHHHH!! Can I shut the alarm off while I am at work? Noone will hear it except for my lizard and my roommate when he gets home today, way before me. I’m afraid it will drive him a little nuts.
One more question. What times did you enter for on and off? Since I only need the HND for a CHE, I really only need it on at night, but if extra heat is needed during the day, I would like it to add the heat, of course. I tried putting it on a 24 hour cycle, but it won’t let me, so I put it on a 23 hour cycle. As you can see, I’m a little confused.
Thanks again and yes, I will gladly wait for pictures tonight.

I think I just turned the alarms off .
Ok, you need to explain better how your using it ? Do you have the bulb on a timer ? What does your basking spot temp get to bulb only ?
I use my HND to supplement the MV . This is my schedule.

My heat projector comes on at 8am to start the basking spot warming up "herpstat"
The twin fluorescents come on at 8:30 am to simulate sunrise "timer"
The megaray MV comes on at 9am "Timer"
The Megaray heat projector goes off at 4pm to start cool down
The megaray MV goes off at 7:30pm "switches to ND mode and is set to 75"
the fluorescents go off at 8:30pm
All that with a herpstat and two timers .
The herpstat is set to 124 day and 75 for night.

Heres how mine is set up .

Okay, cool.
I use the HND only for the CHE. The other light is on a timer. I like the way you have set up yours though, makes a lot of sense. I will try to do the same. I am sorry it took so long for me to write. I will try this all out and give you news ... or be back with more questions.
Merci,
Sophie
