I just purchased a lizard from him. It will take several days before he emails you back as he’s very busy, but he always responds.

I got a red Saharan female, about 1 1/2 years old. The male beat her up so I had to separate them, but I think she’s doing OK now. Paid $125 + shipping. I don’t think I’ll be paying that much again for a lizard.

Count your lucky stars. Even the cheapest uromastyx costs more than double that amount where I come from...

That’s not bad considering coming from a reputable breeder.

The lowest I’ve seen Saharans go for were $50 a piece at a reptile show this past weekend (it was all too obvious why they were that cheap). I’ve also seen some in just as bad shape for $120.

I got a good quality animal for a fair price (maybe even a good price from the responses to my post). I guess compared to the deal I got on the male, it doesn’t look so good. I paid $65 for him with extras like a nice hide, a light dome, a Rep Pro bulb and a big piece of glass, and he’s a very impressive 11 inches. I got him from an ad on Craigslist.

I’m happy with both lizards. The female is still recovering from all the harassment she had to endure from the male. I gave her the 60 gal tank and put the male in the 40 gal tank. I’ll put one of them in the new Showcase cage I just bought or in a Vision 332 if I get a good deal for it.

On the subject of money, I have spent $615 for the lizards and equipment since I got such a good deal on the male :) Just curious, what was the amount you spent - let’s get as many answers as possible - for your Uros setup during the first year?

I’m sure I’m pushing a grand or maybe more on my two. Lizards alone were 350.00 from Lindsey at Urotopia . I built my enclosure and am running a herpstat and a reefkeeper lite for lighting and heat control. You cant put a price on quality.

The cheap comes out expensive in the end.

Try reading this thread, you guys in the USA are lucky you’re in a large market with so many suppliers that everything is cheap. Some of us living in RoW have to get everything imported from other countries and it certainly ain’t cheap.

a Rep Pro bulb

I would stray away from those rep pro mvb china bulbs. they are not safe. I would look into larger enclosures asap as well.

You’re right, from what I have heard , the Rep Pro is junk. I’m using it because it puts out lots of heat. When warmer weather arrive, I’ll junk it. I have never heard anyone say it can hurt a lizard.

I have a 4’ Showcase cage which I will set up soon. I might try to buy a Vision 332 for the male. Believe it or not, I can achieve a good temp grade in the 3’ 40 gallon tank, but it’s only a temporary cage till I get the Showcase set up.

rep pro bulbs don’t last. the mega rays get pretty hot too... I would junk the rep pro bulbs now. I am on the uvb meter owners group and I can tell you most all chinese uvb bulbs are garbage and can have extremely high UVI readings, extremely low total uvb, extremely high total uvb, some with uvc. I would stray away

there also is no coatings on the faces of the rep pros which can have strong spikes of uvb. instead of making it frosted

Strictly speaking, there don’t have to be. The likes of a Mega Ray will have frosting on the face sometimes; this is because each bulb is individually tested for its UVB output and modified accordingly. Some will ship with a completely transparent front face where UVB output is within acceptable tolerances.

I understand certain clear faced mvb’s are tested and fine such as the mega ray zoologist bulbs, however companies with no quality control with meters should be avoided such as the rep pros. there are strong spikes of uv in the bulbs. Also they sell a 60 watt version and anyone that knows about mvb’s will tell you that it is impossible to have a self ballasted mvb that is only 60 watts. the 60 watt bulbs that were tested I believe were using 160 watts of power.... now tell me thats not "shady"

Has someone been trying to reach me that I’ve missed? I get about 30+ e-mails a day plus phone calls so it’s easy for a couple to get buried under new ones before I can get to them all. If you don’t hear back from me in 2 days, please send another e-mail or call me.

I am doing a few trade shows this time of year as well which has me gone for about 4 days at a time (Thurs-Monday I’m not available during those times). Also breeding season is just starting so most my time is out working with the critters and away from the computer and phone. No one else is here to do the work but me so I can get pulled pretty thin.

If you call and miss me, please first leave your complete phone number slowly and clearly, then a short message. You’d be amazed how many people don’t leave their name or their area code. If you call and the phone just keeps ringing, it means the line is tied up by someone else so please try back later (there is no busy signal w/ our phone company’s call waiting service).

Thanks,

Doug

You’ve convinced me. The Rep Pro goes into the trash. Now the damn bulb is making a sliver of light that moves back and forth!
