De-Hydration?!?!
I am a new owner and I am picking up a rescued Uro this weekend - and have some serious concerns and want some input... the person I am getting him from...got him from another individual who was just going to let it die. So, the person I am getting it from rescued it. Now, my reason for concern is what I have been hearing about it. Apparently, the Uro has been consuming LARGE amounts of water - which, as we know...is very unusual. I mentioned this to a fellow Uro owner and he figures that the lizard is probably de-hydrated - which would make sense, if it was rescued from a negligent owner. I am just wondering what you think the best course of action would be - should I keep it on water, until it start’s showing little interest in it - or should I cut the water out...and just ensure it has AMPLE amounts of veggies, for hydration? Thoughts? |

From what I ’believe’ - is that the previous owner (to the one I am getting him from) - either knew little about them...or neglected it, alot! Either improper food or something, to cause it to be requiring so much water. I’m going to watch stool’s for moisture also, and probably has stool’s test for parasites and other possible issues. To confirm - recommend pulling water out altogether and keep up with constant greens? Also, wonder what ’local grocery’ store products most people feed their Uro’s to get up a happy/healthy friend. |

Diet-wise, I can reconfirm, no standing water, no misting, no water of any sort. Humidity should be kept low. All the water they need, they get from their greens. Please see this list of food for some handy greens that you should be able to pick up locally: Link (also browse further around the same site for other details). What I recommend you to do is read and research, then ask any further questions here. Run your setup by us before you put the lizard in it, and we’ll be happy to (constructively) criticise it, to make sure it’s all setup correctly. |

The information I have on his setup - seems to indicate well postioned lights, as well as UVA and UVB lighting. Again, please understand that the information I have is scarce - as I have no pick’s of his setup, nor any real information. Again - as of Saturday, I will have a MUCH better idea of changes and action plan to get this Uromastyx happy and healthy again. I well aware of his needs for basking to help digestion and his need for a ’night’ time setup within his tank. Trust me - I’m not the type of person to go into a situation, ill-prepared! ;) I feel very strongly for this Uro, considering it’s background - and total disregard for life. I am totally aware of no water - he is a Mali, and will not have water in the tank, I guess I just wanted feedback on the ’de-hydration’ issue in itself. Thank you for the link - haven’t checked it out yet, but I will cross-reference it with the dietary plan I have in place. I appreciate your honesty - I do, and I take NO offense what-so-ever. I fully understand ill-prepared pet owners and their total disregard for the most important thing here - the animal. Thank you for you help! It is greatly appreciated! :) I will post again, as I see his setup and have any other concerns. |

if this uro is dehydrated and/or has renal issues I would encourage drinking not discourage it. if this uro was left to die I would take it to a vet. you say you have a 60 gallon tank which I assume is an open top?(I would get double that 4x2x2 is what you should aim for or larger) if so a small shallow lid of 50/50 water/pedialyte (clear) will help restore electrolytes hydration. if this uro has been off feed and left to die I would come to assume it’s bacterial flora inside the stomach would be very weak and would benefit from the liquid. I would offer fresh staple greens everyday along with the cap of liquids. if you have a closed top I would take it out after an hour or two depending on circumstances and humidiy therein. This uro may have a weakened immune system from previous neglect so be prepared for a vet bill or two. Find a vet that has experience treating uro’s....not just one. I would get everthing correct before you take he uro home. I would also place it on paper towel or newspaper for a whil until he is gaining weight and eating well. after the ur is eaing well (hopefully within a week) there would be no need for a waterlid but in this case I personally would. if the uro drinks large amounts of water...let him...he is drinking for good reason....the pedialyte may help along with a small amount nutribac df every week until it is defecating regularly. |

As for cross-referencing the link with your own findings, I’ll give you a little warning that you might find that what you believe doesn’t always tally with what’s on the linked site (not just food, but other areas of care too). The purpose of the wiki is to address that very issue - much of the information that’s out there is old, incorrect, and a lot of it just plain contradicts the rest. The wiki was started as a way to sort out the wheat from the chaff, taking into account recent research and findings, as well as the experiences of keepers and breeders who have had uromastyx for a long time. If something you have read elsewhere contradicts with the wiki, it’s more likely that the wiki is correct - however, nobody and nothing is perfect, so if you have doubts or questions, please do ask about them here! Good luck, and we look forward to following your progress and helping wherever we can. Glad to see somebody doing this much research beforehand, you wouldn’t believe the amount who come on already in possession of a lizard and with no clue of what they’re supposed to be doing... |

This is kind of a rough situation for me, being my first Uro and it being so special (in the way of possible issues) - so I am very determined to do this properly and care for this animal, as it should be. My plan currently will be the change out the entire sand in his keep - as I feel, who the heck knows when anything was done with this poor guy, are you ’recommending’ newspaper for now? From what I understand, he is extremely friendly and seems to enjoy being handled - which may help me in seeing how heavy he is. I have found a member of my unit (I’m in the military) - that specializes in reptile care in my area - does extensive and indepth medical treatment on ALL species of reptile, and I have also emailed him with regards to my new little friend and treament options. As I indicated in my first post - he was rescued from an owner who was more content to let it die...and simply get money for the aquarium it was in....than to properly care for this Uro, so you may see more posts from me as I continue to research and monitor my new friend. Rose - I appreciate all your help so far, and hope to continue a strong relationship with this forum. I understand your desire to educate and inform, as I WOULD believe how many people do! LOL - I’m from an area here that has a surprising high number of lizards and snakes....and I hear a lot of horror stories. Really bothers me...thus, I am going to ensure I am VERY prepared when this Uro shows up. Thank you for you help! :) |
