AFM Safecoat Acrylacq is the best and safest wood sealer.im not quite sure how to explain it but it seals the wood so no Toxic stuff emits sry if im incorrect but u need to seal the wood with acrylacq u need too!i bought mine here Acrylacq. And the silicone is for the open parts between the wood which u also have to do.Acrylacq is only $18 for a QT and aquarium silicone is only $4

I could have this wrong, but isn’t the sealer used for the protection of the wood as well?? (I realize that it also protects the Uro from the toxins that might be in the wood or paint you use, but I always thought one of the main reasons for using it was protect the wood from the damage that can be caused by an animal living in it.....It creates a protective bearier that allows MUCH easier clean-up....Think about it, ... if all the animals waste and everything was allowed to just seap into the wood, it wouldn’t exactly be the best situation for the animal or the enclosure itself.)

Wood is extremely absorbent. Bare wood will absorb all kinds of nasty things like oder’s,urine, moisture, etc.
If not properly sealed it will rot ,smell and look terrible and fall apart in a relatively short period of time.

You will need to apply a water-based urethane over the stain.....It was such a long time ago, I honestly can’t remember the name of the one I used, but I believe it was a Rust Oleum product.....I do know it was made for "outdoor exposure"...(and in case you were wondering, the brand "acrylacq" is certainly a good product, and well worth using...however, there are certainly other products available that will work.)

look on the wiki in the near future (this week i promise) for a huge writeup about my big enclosure build (almost complete). I am trying to edit it as much as possible to give details on everything. and lots of pictures too.

The acrylacq is used to seal the wood, its a water based stain that does not emit dangerous toxins at the temperatures that Uro’s require. It will also protect the wood from feces, odors, etc. Be sure to use oak or melamine (either one as long as its formaldehyde free). I chose the oak because it is much stronger
