 Update on my uro!

Everything is doing great Thursday (pay day) I’m getting a CHE with the required fixture. So the CHE will only be used for nightly heat. Now that I’ve gotten my MVB he has been a lot more active and alert, he comes out 4-5 times a day to bask and stays there for 30 minutes and walks around and goes back into his hide. I finally found curly endive at IGA (grocery store) today, so he is on a dandelion, curly endive mix now!!! He tried the curly endives but im not sure if he likes them but he will come around at some point. I’m calling the vet here in town see if he knows anything at all about uros, if not i have to find a way to Montreal. Get him a check up, fecal test, x-ray, ect... He has never been to a vet in his whole life. his previous owner didnt really care much, and he obviously didnt do his research. Well as you may now my uro has had MBD for 6 months now, and he had it when i got him 3 months ago. So ever since he has been on a high calcium diet, and his legs are starting to move more, but he has very little muscles in his rear legs, and is there any other way to get his muscle back to normal, or will the muscles grow in time when he gets more bone density? is there any type of physical therapy we can do to accelerate the muscle growth?

not likely. if they look/appear bad to you, then its probley pretty bad. you can not repair/reverse MBD, but you can halt the process of it continuing. typically... what you see is what you’ve got, forever.

nope. not really..... but better husbandry will make him more comfortable during his now painful life.

does he walk around at all or does he just drag his lower half around the tank?
have you ever noticed him seizure or twitch unusually? crooked spine?

 Update on my uro!

I know someone who has a savannah monitor. He is a poor sad looking little thing. He was kept in a ten gallon tank with no UVB for a few years before the person who currently has him picked him up.
I’m actually quite surprised he’s even alive. He’s about 4 years old and barely over a foot long "should be over three feet"and his body is all kinds of twisted and stunted. His limbs are very stiff and barely move .
But... with proper care he now gets all over the place, eats like crazy and is living a relatively normal life. He’s the sweetest thing.
He will never look normal but at least he now has someone who cares about him.

Your uro may never fully recover but I would guess with proper care the MBD will cease and his bones will strengthen up and he could live a long and happy life.
Just keep doing the right things and he will continue to improve.

 Update on my uro!

My Uro could barely use her back legs when I first got her. One test for MBD is to feel along her spine. Supposedly if there aren’t any bumps or deformities then it’s not likely MBD. It took a few weeks of proper husbandry to get my Uro back to health, but now she can actually run around.

Your Uro is probably just very weak. I did treat for worms and amoabi infection.

 Update on my uro!

yeah.
i re-read my post i wrote. i guess i may have made it seem utterly hopeless. i supose that its not always the case. my concern is, that since this person is so new to uro husbandry and money is an issue, it might be quite a long journey for his uro.
what i ment is that if he thinks its really bad (being new to uro’s) then in actuality its probely really really bad. i understand that with intense care and proper steps taken that there is a glimer of hope at the end of the tunel.
but i kinda look at MBD like a person who smokes for many many years. yeah, if they stop smoking and start living healthy, after many years there life expectancy increases but it will never be like if they had never smoked in the first place. its just a shame that such things like MBD need to occure when there is so much info out there to prevent it from needlessly happening.

on a side note - your story about your friends monitor is a shame. a 10 gallon?????? omg. 1 foot long? ouch. thats terrible. glad ots somewhere where it can be well takin after now.

cheers
