 Pen or cage?

I am pondering the idea of making pens for my mali and one for another uro. They are open top....my BTS loves it, and my tortoises that I don’t want to hibernate, like it too. I think it has helped a lot with our interaction. I am wondering if uros are to skittish to have this type of enclosure? It would be 7’ long x3’ wide x2’ high

My BTS pen is 7’x3’

A complete open top would be to hard almost impossible to get the correct temps in and your uro would escape.Thats what Jbredawgg and some other people told me!

These enclosures look very nice ! I’m sure you most likely have them in a temp controlled room or area and the basking lamps are setup pretty nice. As long as the sides are high enough for the uros to not escape and you don’t have cats, I see no reason you cant use one.

Perfextionezz, dont answer someones question by using something that someone else told you. Give advice from your own experiences.

Yes, the room is temperature controlled for their comfort...not mine. The only free roaming animals are a tortoise or 2 that like to follow me around.
I believe I will try it. If after an adjustment period to new surroundings he continues to hide, I can go back to cabinets for him. It is the whole ’overhead predator’ thing I am concerned about. I will just keep my movements slow and predictable over him.......and just see how it works out.
Appreciate the input.

I sure like that one. You could even have a lid for it if need be and still see in from the sides.

I had a 3’ x 5’ space between my WD and my dart frogs......space must be used, right? I wanted something quick and easy. I put 5 cinder blocks on the floor and laid a sheet of plywood on that. For the sides, I use those closet bi-fold doors... they are thick lightweight and sturdy and they come in a variety of widths (which laid sideways would be the height of pen walls). If you are building in a corner you would really only need 2 sides.

I covered the part of the door that you can see with super sticky shelving paper.

the inside got a wash of water base color...nothing heavy.

Slate is buried in the sand which is 6" deep. The slate has caves and hides that he can expose if he does a little digging under both the hot spot and the cool side.

I really don’t have much tweeking to do on it. It took 2 days to put together and I didn’t have to use chemicals or sealers, just elmers glue.

That looks fantastic !! He sure has lots of room to roam lol Just make sure the stacks of rocks are touching the bottom and cannot fall on him if he digs under them. Uro’s are diggers !
Really a pretty cool setup .

Thank you. I put together all the stones, rocks and slate in the pen first with friction tape to hold in place. Then I flooded the enclosure with the sand. Since he does like to dig so much it is going to come in handy because the good hides have to be dug out.

It always amazes me when people say their uro is "fat and lazy and just lays around all day" Thats a uro not properly heated up !!
And can you even imagine such active lizards in a 20 gallon tank ?

Couple things I notice after moving to larger pen. His appetite has increased and his color is better.

I think I am getting a handle on keeping uros. Think I am going to have to find me another one.
Not another mali....I am not interested in breeding them. I would like a larger different colored uro.

Large cages are truly meant for the well being of these animals.
