Show me your cooling fan setups?

My tank is 70 gallons and im having a little trouble getting the cool end to stay where i want it to. I bought two reptile cooling fans. SHould i have the fans suck heat out or blow air down? The problem is that there isnt much sucking power from the small fans so is it ok to have air blowing into the cage? My cage is glass so i dont have any way to make an exhaust outlet so i am curious to see how you guys cool down your cool end in the summer time.

I think i am also going to get rid of my 100 watt light bulb hanging over the cool end and put in one of those screw in LED lights you can get at home depot that emit no heat. Anybody make use of an LED in their cage?

A 70 gallon should be large enough to maintain a proper temperature gradient without the use of fans--do you have a shot of the setup and could you provide more details. As for replacing the 100watt, that would be a very good idea, this is most likely the reason your cool end temps are off. I would suggest replacing it with a non-UVB higher wattage daylight rated (6500K) compact fluorescent--something in the 23-27w range.

yea it has to be that bulb, when i take it out the temps on the cool side start dropping. Are you saying to get one of those CFL twisty bulbs? The deep dish domes for lighting i have can only have incandescent bulbs thats why i was thinking about the LED bulbs.

What do you mean they can only house incandescent? I would think a CFL (yes, the corkscrew shaped bulbs) should work just fine. If not, just buy a standard 10" aluminum worklight (can be found at any home improvement store, walmart etc etc for ~$10) and use that with a 23, 26 or 27watt daylight rated CFL rather than spending +$35 on an LED flood.

That’s 75w incandescent equivalent, not actual 75w, correct? I only ask because the highest wattage CFL I’ve seen is 55w, which is the equivalent to a 250w incandescent. Also, I would recommend a 6500k/daylight rated bulb to better simulate the color temperature of natural daylight.

hey do you think that it is ok to have a small fan blowing air into the tank when temps get too high or would moving air in the tank cause respiratory problems for the Uro? Its basically two computer fans tied together so its not a ton of air but just enough for some air movement.

That should be a 100w equivalent, which is actually 26-27w. As for the fans, I would think the only useful way to use them is if they were hooked up to a thermostat. You’re using an mvb as a primary basking lamp, correct? If so how far is it mounted from the basking spot?

yea the fan is hooked up to a Herpstat thermostat and Powersun bulb is the basking lamp at 20 inches from the slate with another regular 50w flood over the basking area to get the basking spot temps up to around 115-120, the 50w flood is on the Herpstat as well and turns off when the hot side of the tank gets above 95 to keep that side around 95. In the winter i put a CHE on the Herpstat for the night time.

I just picked up a 100w CFL bulb that is 5500k and it is really nice bright light without the heat of the other bulb i had.

Could you post an image of the setup? That would definitely help me make further possible suggestions to you.

I agree with vers a low wattage CFL with a high CRI and a color temperature of 5000-6500k would be a start. I would use the herpstat on a 50-75 watt halogen flood and have the lamps close to the end. the temps in the cool end should drop. Also a great idea for smaller cages without room for secondary basking areas. Just add some bricks and slate to give a low dark hide right under the basking area so the uro can still absorb heat without UV. obviously a cool end hide as well which you already know i’m sure.
