 Someone! PLZ!

I’m looking for a Saara loricata, AKA Uromastx Ioricata anyone know where I can get one? I’m starting to build a setup, thinking about buying a baby uro this coming fall.

What are the best private breeders? Whats all this talk on Deer Fern Farms care sheet about "While many if not most sites still recommend the use of a UVB producing Mercury Vapor basking bulb, after many years of trials, we no longer feel these are a good choice for your reptile."

What about metal hallide?

I’ve had alot of experience with BeardedDragons but this will be my first uro and I’m very excited, just want to get the right species.

Im sure I’ll have lots of more questions, building a custom cage right now

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!

I don’t know about that particular species...but I still believe with any basking /sun loving lizard they must have UVB ...a pure death sentence without it. Slow but sure...unless you can offer real unfiltered sunshine.

I also keep an adult Iguana and 15 bearded dragons , 2 Blue tongue skinks and numerous snakes...Have listened to Ryan Urokeepeer and purchased lamps from him as well. ]

If I were you I would file that info into the " ROUND " file.

Good luck on your search

I can’t argue with Doug Dix’s husbandry as he’s far more experienced than I, and most others, and has clearly had success with many species of Uromastyx (and other reptiles) however I’m in the pro-UVB lamp camp. I figure if they receive it (UVB) in the wild and if used properly it causes no known ill effects that it is a good idea to provide it in captivity when natural sun light is unavailable. From what I understand Dix uses various supplements in order to substitute actual UVB light. In regards to the species of Saara you’ve inquired about, I think you will have an extremely hard time coming across any individuals for sale, especially within the US. In fact, the only Saara species I’ve seen for sale here within the past few years has been S. hardwiki (previously known as U. hardwiki). Other than that I’ve seen some S. loricata European stock, but that’s about it.

If you’re looking to get into Uromastyx it would be wise, assuming you haven’t already, to read through UroWiki in it’s entirely. In regards to the ’right’ species to choose, that really depends on your level of competence and or experience...some species are known to be difficult to acclimate (benti, rainbow, macfad) but like everything else there are always exceptions. Other species, like malis, bandeds, moroccans and, for those with enough space, egyptians, tend to be more hardy species. While this applies to many animals, I believe with proper conditions and husbandry most people can have success with this genus, though I wouldn’t recommend them to just anyone. Also, FWIW, there is a member, a fellow Californian, who posted a week or so ago looking to find a good home for their newly acquired mali--perhaps that would be a good place to start?
