Uro shedding and not pooing for 21 days

hi all, long time lurker first time poster.
my uro seph has always been a once a week pooper, doing huge poos and when he sheds he poos even less but this time he has had a full body shed, starting with his back legs and then his whole body/front legs and he has not done a poo in 21 days, last time it was about 14 days. He is still eating but not much, one or two bites a day, he is walking fine and i can not feel any lumps/hardness along his belly. He is sleeping more but is still very attentive. I have removed the sand from his home in case it was causing a problem. I have not seen him trying to go a toilet, no signs of straining or anything at all. i have tried a little bit of olive oil on some leafs but he will not eat them.
My question is , is it normal for a uro to go so long without pooing when shedding? could it be impaction if he is showing no signs of straining. At what point do i go to the vets? i do not get paid till friday, is this too long to wait?

1) How long have you owned the animal
8 months

2) Dimensions of the enclosure you are using. Measure it- do not guess or give gallon size
4 foot by 2 foot

3) Species (if known), length, and weight of the animal
geryi length 7 inches weight 75grams

4) Listing of all animals kept in the enclosure referred to in the post
seph - uromastxy geryi

5) Basking spot temperature and how that temperature was measured
122 - heat gun

6) Temperature throughout the rest of the enclosure (warm and cool areas) and how these temperatures were measured e.g. digital thermometer, stick on dial thermometer. Provide the nighttime temperatures as well.
110 hot end - 90 cool end - night 77 , i know the cool end is slightly high but he never goes down there and i have trouble getting the temps down there lower. temps controlled with digital thermometer which controls day and night temps

7) Acknowledge whether you are using a UVB bulb and if so, the brand, age of bulb, and distance from the bulb to the uromastyx
D3+ T5 High Output lamp UVB strip bulb and 100 watt ceramic heater bulb ( http://www.arcadia-reptile.com/products/d3-reptile-t5-lamp/ )

8) Diet items being fed and how often each item is fed
butternut squash daily, lentils weekly, salad from packs given daily as follows hard, coral lettuce, rocket and tatsoi, lambs lettuce Green batavia lettuce, lollo rosso lettuce, rocket, radicchio and Green Batavia leaves.

9) List of the supplements being used, how much is used, and how often the supplement is used
nutobal every other day

10) Type of substrate (cage bottom material). If this is sand, state whether it is calcium sand
was sand but sand removed just in case and is now kitchen lino and slate tiles

11) Describe your animal’s daily routine. When it exits the hide, when it retreats for the night, how long it is usually out throughout the day, is it active during this time, how much time does it spend sitting on the basking spot….
wakes just after light comes on at 8 o`clock in the morning , goes over to basking spot and rests for 1-2 hours then goes and sits on wooden outcrop and watches till he gets feed when he goes mad, running about for an hour (not he has stopped doing this)

12) Describe your animal’s appetite.
used to eat three meals a day but now eats 1-2 leafs

13) Describe any unusual behaviors you are seeing or any recent changes in behavior. Also note whether any recent modifications have been made to this animal’s environment. e.g new enclosure, move to another room, new heat bulb....
has slowed down a lot but is still attentive, no changes to his home outside of the removing of sand after the 15th day

14) Describe how often this animal is handled and the type of handling.
hardly handled at all except when feeding and even then its him running on the hand feeding him

15) State whether the animal has been to a vet, when that was, and whether the animal was diagnosed with a medical condition. Also state whether the uromastyx has ever had a fecal check. If so states when the fecal check was done, what was found, and if medication was prescribed.
never been to vet or had a fecal check done.

Uro shedding and not pooing for 21 days

Hi and welcome! First off the species you own is not geryi, rather ocellata, otherwise known as ocellated or Sudanese. While your cool end is a bit warm (I tend to keep mine around 85-90f) as long as there are hides that offer relief from the heat the uro will be fine. If you feel the need to get your temps lower you can either lower the bulb/raise the basing surface and either use a lower wattage lamp/CHE or put the lamp/CHE on a dimmer OR you can add a vent or two with a fan to such the residual warm air out. Diet wise I would cut the frequency of squash down to every couple of days--while it’s a fine food item daily servings is a bit much. Aside from the squash, I’m only familiar with radicchio and have no clue whether or not the others offer any nutritional value to the uro. Personally I stick to curly endive and escarole as staple greens mixing in a combination of various other food items every couple of days, which include, but are not limited to, dandelion greens/flowers, spaghetti squash, soaked/sprouted lentils, collards, bok choy and more rarely shredded carrot and apple peel. That said, I would definitely check to ensure the greens you’re offering are ideal--if not thy may have something to do with the infrequent bowel movements. In addition to this I do not think you need to be using nutrobal as often as you are provided a proper calcium to phosphorus ratio is provided. A well balanced diet and proper lighting is more important, IMO. What type of sand were you using? Knowing this is very important as certain sands can cause health issues, which may relate to the issue your uro is currently having. You also never mentioned the EXACT UVB bulb you’re using (Arcadia makes 6% and 12% t5 HO bulbs), how far it is from the animal nor the age of the bulb--this information is critical.

In addition to the above the apparent issue can be associated with and or caused by various other factors. Do you recall what the most recent stool looked like? Was it runny, discolored or abnormally rancid? If so it’s quite possible the uro contracted internal parasites, which can harbor themselves in most food items, wild harvested or store bought. Is the uro going through a shed at the moment? Often times many reptiles will refuse to eat and become less active during sheds. Also, how are you measuring ambient temps and humidity levels?

Thanks for taking the time to replie,

you are the second person to say he is not a geryi and rather a ocellata which is worrying as i have allways treated him as a geryi. he was on washed playsand. Hes last poo was wet one end and very dry the other while hes normal poo would be quite wet all the way along. Hes light was a 12% not 5% and distance was 17 inches without the sand and 13 with (lights are 8 months old - order replacements just now). he is just finishing a shed that has last pretty much the whole month, so hes pooing stopped when the shed started.

His 100watt heater holder failed last night and i had to put in a 60watt to cover it, 110 under basking , 95 floor around the basking spot going down to 80 and he has been eating! so far 5 leaves, the most he has eaton is 2 leafs a dayish for weeks

Basic care is virtually identical for all species within the genus, so don’t worry about that. One thing worth mentioning about washed play sand is that fact that a lot of it is comprised of silica/crushed quartz, which is considered a hazardous material by OSHA. Like I’ve stated before I’m not entirely sure if this would have any ill effect on reptiles, but anything that could cause serious health issues in humans should be questioned.

As for lighting, I would definitely try to raise the basking surface and or lower the UVB fixture in order to get at least a part of it within 8-12" of the animal. A sloped surface or a well anchored branch or two would do the trick. Currently my new Arcadia 12% t5 HO bulbs are putting out ~290 uW/cm^2 @ 7", ~245 uW/cm^2 @ 10" and ~180 uW/cm^2 at 13". While they would provide ample UVB @ 17" directly below the bulb when new, they will eventually lose punch over time and become much less effective. Allowing the animal to choose different levels of UVB exposure would be ideal and it would lengthen the effective life of your bulbs. I would imagine Arcadias would last longer than 8mo on average, but the only way of knowing would be to test them using a UV meter, otherwise you’re just guessing. On thing you never mentioned was how you are measuring ambient temps and humidity levels, which is important.

It’s good to hear that he/she is back to eating again, at least more than previously. Just keep an eye out for a fresh stool and when that does happen, if you get to it soon enough, I would recommend putting it in a plastic bag and then send it in for testing. This will let you know whether or not the uro has parasites. If it doesn’t pass anything in the next week I would consider bringing it in for a checkup.

Uro shedding and not pooing for 21 days

Hi all,
got in today and found a little `gift` as it were, the first poo after 25 days! and on the day before visting the vets as well. i have taken the stool up to the vets to get it checked. His not moved much but i guess the first poo after 25 days will do that. He temps are measured with a IR gun not tested humidity as the room he is in is like a oven during the day. I have orderd a new arcadia light for him just to be safe, the light also has a reflector which i never mentioned before.

a pic of the poo, not for the faint of heart.

That’s a good sign for sure. The stool looks pretty light...almost like sand? As for measuring temps, I would highly suggest picking up an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer/hydrometer with a wireless probe, which should run you right around $15. This will allow you to continuously measure AIR temps and humidity levels, rather than just surface temps. Keep the probe on one end and the main unit on the other end to keep track of your thermal gradient.

No idea if it was sand as i did not want to pick it apart, as it was going to the vets. he does have a air temp thermometer in there one of these Lucky Reptile Thermo Control PRO II (http://www.luckyreptile.com/products/145/en/pid1,0$pid2,7773431/products.html) you can see the lead from it in the pic i posted but not a humidity one, i will order one now for him, thanks for the advice. i have moved hes viv around a bit to have a better gradient for him.
