hognoses are mild venom!all they do is make the bite sting and sweel a lil!I say BABy copperhead! i caught mine yesterday and know that they cant kill u and if u do get bit DO go to a doctor because they will kill tisue if u dont hurry!but if u dont it will swell so bad and they will have to amputate the part u get bit on!my gf got bit onb the foot by one and went to hospital and her foot only sweeled and in 2 weeks she was up and running again!but be careful!Oh yah its my first venamous snake as a PET!

Trust me venomous snakes are not fun to play with and handle... Mostly all venomous snakes can kill you in matters of hours... For instant my friend had his first venomous snake and it bit his foot he was alergic and they ended up having to cut all his 5 toes off... Heck you should just start out at simple starter snakes and work your way up...(even though jeff lets his 9 year old go herping and catching timbers!!! LOL) but yeah start off with a ribon snake and move up to pythons and boas and then move to a hognose and so on and so forth... I agree with your mom though...

Hey SMC.. the BEST beginner hot... here..its what most keepers wont tell you because we all greedy...

Get a boomslang.. dont tell your parents though its a seeeeecret... they are AWESOME or.. get a mamba even better.. but make sure every day you pet its head....

as for the kid with his first venomous he caught....asking on another thread...what to feed.. I still say you should release it...

As for the one saying they dont want a hognose because it isnt venomous enough...its a good starter, and if your wanting something that is ’venomous’ your wanting it strictly for cool points and are what I like to call in my profession...job security..will prolly hear about you on the evening news heres the headline

"Stupid Juvenile thinks life really bites....literally" after you get a nice bite end up sick..and btw..a copperhead CAN kill you if your allergic to the venom... it can cause anaphylaxis... So dont under estimate a bit, it can also cause damage to nerve and muscle depending on placement of bite...and if it doesnt kill you your going to wish you were dead.....

God I hate ... *Shuts up* people like that that keep me in work

Yes {Jeff}, Me does allow my 9 year old to go herping with me but he is supervised and not able to come near the timbers. He has learned from an early age how to respond when spotting herps in the wild..Cracks like that are what cause these forums to fail!! You guys just can’t resist a negative shot..

I did research earier and there is only 2 confirmed deaths by copperheads!
So i would say copperhead if ub want a venamous snake unvenamous i would go with rough green snake,corn snake,watrsnake,hognose (hoggies kik @$$) or maybe a garter

I have been thinking of getting a venomous snake myself. but I am weary. I’m 28 years olf and I’ve been handling snakes for over 20 years. I was thinking of the eastern timber rattler. I fell in love with them at a rattle snake round up in PA. they are very pretty snakes and very docile. not somethine you handle or let your kids play with but there not quick to bite. but as a starter I was thinking of the mangrove or the massura (spelling) mildly venomous but rear fanged. but as I said I’m 28 and I still dont consider myself "ready" for a hot. some day though I hope. :)

Ok,everyone knows we are talkin to a kid right?The more people are mean to him,the more he is gonna try to do everything he can to get a hold of a venomous snake.Thats what young kids do.I think a simple ’ not a good idea and here is why’ should do it..I cant believe people think they are so hard that they wanna crack on a kid.Especially what you said celtic tigress..Just cause he is a kid who may not have the best idea,dosnt mean people should treat him like a retard and hurt his feelings..And jeff,why would oketee offend you with his comment?If its a fact,why would it offend you??You offended everyone one on this sight!And then you came back like nothing happend.....I really dont think you should get a hot snake kid...I have had snakes off and on for 10 years...The most venomous snake I will probably ever own is a false water cobra.....Hot snakes are a whole different ball game...There are so many cool snakes out there,that wont hurt you if they bite you...Your mom has good reason to say no..You must understand where she is comin from....Just make the right decision and hold off for a while..You have nothing to prove by getting a hot...And you might gain a few years of life if you dont get one...Make a list of pros and cons..There shouldnt be any pros for you to get one,and the con should be you would be in a would of hurt if you got bit....Its not worth it for now...

BigJim84 You pretty much covered it these forums wouldn’t move if people didn’t have something negitive to say. Look down the list the longiest threads are all flamming someone post something decent and very few replies at all.

People love to be ignorant much easier than being nice.

Kid if I was you I would wait find a mentor and work with non venomous for a while. You mom is only trying to keep you on this earth a while longer. Trust me you will understand one day.

you can’t blame a ten year old for wanting to emulate you guys. he reads these threads, sees the awesome pictures, sees the sense of community that you seem to have formed....of course he’s going to want to be a part of all that. kids are easily influenced....i think it’s great that he’s expressing interest in being like you guys rather than wanting to copy the guy at school that buys cool clothes with the money he gets from selling his mom’s prescriptions.
i’m a mom, and there is no way on god’s green earth that i would let my ten year old child get a venemous anything. don’t blame your mom....it’s love and concern, you should appreciate it and one day you will.
as for you older people who have a lot of experience with venemous snakes, why don’t some of you put yourselves out there for this kid? for example, jeff has a nine year old who apparently has some experience with hots. that’s kind of a different circumstance because he is learning with his experienced dad right there to teach him and monitor him. jeff, why don’t you talk to your son, who would be this kids’s peer, and see if they can keep in contact and let this kid slowly gather information from someone his own age that has some of the experience?
obviously, he should not get a venemous snake right now. but that’s no reason to discourage him from ever doing it. if he spends the next few years gathering information and hearing other people’s stories, maybe one day he’ll be the "GO-TO" guy on this forum.

don’t do it my friend was killed by a gaboon viper i don’t want you to die to now im not saying your not experienced with snakes but your 2 young a snake or your life ask your self that what would you family think if you were killed by a snake kid all im saying is even experienced snake owners make mistakes and pay the price which can mean death its not like a non venomous snake you oly have 1 chance i already have been bitten by a snake thank god it was not hot.

There are no venmous snakes that are for bieginers alot are illigle to keep and you have to have husbandry and caging equpment to keep one i would listen to your mom if you want some fascenating snake that is going to kill you then ask her for a reticulated python won’t you Lol.
