Sidewinder right???... They look a lot smaller then the ones around here - Colorado!!! But as I am looking around there is a species called a "Colorado Desert Sidewinder" so they are here in Colorado???? I am more familiar with the Diamond Backs here, I have never seen one of these! I do not have a lot of knowledge about "hots" - I love to look and learn!!! |

The Colorado Desert gets its name from being in the region of California where the Colorado River hits. As far as history has ever recorded, there have not been sidewinders in the state of Colorado. Sidewinders are a low elevation snake. Hope this clears a few things up |

The genus crotalus are rattlesnakes. the horned viper, or Cerastes cerastes, is a viper but isn’t a rattler. plus rattlesnakes are Ovoviviparous, meaning it gives birth to live young and the horned viper is viviparous meaning it lays eggs. they look somewhat alike but are really different. |

Viviparous means they give live birth. Oviparous means they lay eggs Ovoviviparous is a dropped scientific term. We now separate two forms of viviparity. Lecithotrophic viviparity is a more yolk based development, and placentotrophic viviparity is a more vascular based development. All viviparous snakes are placentotrophic to a degree, but among live bearing snakes, there are both placentotrophic and lecithotrophic species. Hope this also helps clear up that issue : ) |

Technically, no. Cerastes cerastes isn’t it’s own species. Cerastes is the genus with cerastes as the species. Just like crotalus cerastes isn’t it’s own species, it’s the genus with the species being cerastes. |

LOL. We usually only drink after herping and never before flights, so I don’t think we have to worry about that. I made the mistake of having one too many Guaro the night before we took the collectivo ride to Puerto Jiminez one year. It was the longest, bumpiest 2 hour drive in the back of a pick-up I’ve ever had. Lesson learned. Africa is in the works, but I’m thinking we’re going to be far south of the Sahara. I’d love to go to the Saharan, but the whole 125 degree thing makes me cringe. I’ll take a rainforest anyday. BTW, if anyone is interested, we’re planning a CR trip for May 9th-23rd. We won’t be on the Osa, but will hit Panama. If anyone wants to see wild aspers and eyelash vipers, it’s definitely a trip for you. Sully, I did get what you were saying, I just had to make it a little more confusing. ; ) |
