yes, very good step into hot keeping, and if you arent looking to get into hots they are still really cool species to keep.

mangrove snakes can have a bit of a ’tude, but usually they arent too bad unless its night time- when it is night time you have almost 0 chance of holding one w/o getting bitten, they are very nocturnal and their feeding response is CRAZY at night, from what i here.

false water cobras generally have a better demeanor, they get quite large, need large cages, big water bowl.
i havent kept either personally, so i wont go any further.

I havent had either of those, but I recently started working into venomous with a blonde madagascar hognose, which I am very happy with. Feeding is being a little iffy still, they are a very shy species, but they are handleable. The madagascar hognoses are more like false cobras than north american hognoses, they have a slighty more toxic venom, they will form a nice hood sometimes, they really are great! I am thinking about possible getting a Mangrove snake before getting anything more toxic

I just received a juvie (3.5’) FWC after reading the article on them in the latest Reptiles mag. This is a fast, strong snake, and as the article stated, it will knock over everything in the tank not nailed down. You will need a large, heavy duty water bowl and a solid hide box, emphasis on heavy and solid. I have a few plants in the corners of the cage (36"x16"x16") and one stout branch for it to climb on but that’s it.
As soon as I released it from the shipping container it went into feeding mode (frenzy is more like it). Within the next 6 hours it ate a slow lizard, a f/t hopper, 2 live hoppers and a cricket. Now it’s ready to shed and hasn’t eaten since. Due to its condition I have not handled it yet, except to pull it back into the cage after it chased an anole out.
All in all I am impressed with this animal and am thinking about a mangrove next, but know nothing about them. (I do have two other hots, a M&F C. atrox.)

Good luck!
JD
