PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN TO RESPECT SNAKES!

OK so it’s the beginning of spring and the snakes are coming out of hibernation, but lately I’ve seen lots of nonvenomous snake dead on the road and i have recently just took a hurt gopher snake off the road. it has been stepped on by a car and could hardly move....poor snake! well, people that don’t know much about snakes, don’t care and think that all snakes are bad. my question is how do i get people to stop killing nonvenomous snakes or a least how can i teach people to know which snakes are venomous and which aren’t? i wanna help people and snakes too! i love snakes and i think people should learn how to respect them......any ideas???????

Sorry, Giosnake, but you will be fighting an uphill battle. People have been hating snakes since Adam and Eve got screwed over, allegedly, by a serpent. Hatred, and also fear, are passed down from generation to generation, and with so many negative myths about herps out there it is damn near impossible to break the chain.
My suggestion to help get the word out that snakes are our friends is to find a Herpetological society or collectors club near you. Many of them have educational programs in the schools to familiarize kids with our cold-blooded neighbors, and show them that they are animals to be respected for eating vermin. Or, if you live in a state where morons hold round-ups and dump gasoline down gopher turtle holes to get rattlers, try bugging your legislators for a ban on that crap. Screw tradition- real men don’t participate in a slaughter just for and giggles.
I commend your initiative and wish you good luck in your quest for peace in the Reptile kingdom.

John

You know sadly i see this all the time where i live also. It bugs me greatly. People are always assuming that every snake they see is a rattlesnake just because we have them.
Last summer i was hiking and i herd some kids up the mountain say hey look a rattlesnake. as soon as i herd this i headed up the mountain and when i got to the top sure enough there was a rattlesnake. but what bothered me was that the kids where throwing rocks at it. I yelled at them and then i caught the snake and took it home (i had my hook). It was pretty beat up but luckily it pulled through.

The best thing i think you can do if you own reptiles is try to volunteer at schools and other local functions like Navy_JD said. i am taking my snakes and lizards to a festival in may. i will have an educational booth set up.

i hope this helps.

The best place’s to start are preschools. 4-5 year olds always view herps with intrigue and curiosity. They have yet to be screwed up by the "Ewe they are slimey", crowd of total morons.

Good point by Dawn and Terry. I was chasing frogs and toads around at that age, and only thought that girls were gross and slimy!

I know that one. It was garter snakes and alligator lizards here. Then after about 40 more years it just got a lot worse, or better depending on your perspective.

the funny part is that when i here kids at school talkin about "oh just grab it behind the head" and stuff like that here’s what my exact thought is,"it’s not that easy when you’re face to face with a venomous snake"

i am 1 of those stupid people who i hate 2 say it r scared of snakes. i am trying 2 get past it though. i would never advocate killing anything! i am a first time owner of geckos and i never liked lizards b4 now. i now understand the love 4 reps, now! they r so beatiful and oh so smart and to my amazment have a personality. people don’t understand THAT. i grew up w/ copperheads n cottonmouths all over as a kid. if my dad had tried 2 help me understand them nstead of fear them mayb things would b diff. i on the other hand do not want my kids 2 b afraid but understand. so far my 3rd kid wants a snake but shes 2 young 2 take care of it yet. so yes education is definately the way 2 go. but we do need 2 get the gov n on protecting our animals until the public learns.
