C.cerastes cerastes. First off id like to point out that the name is C. Cerastes the C. is just short for cerastes its not C. cerastes cerastes ive owened a pair in the past and second that is a sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes) not a desert horned viper (Cerastes cerastes) and i strongly feel if you dont even know the speices of venomous you are keeping you should not be keeping hots. the more bites there are the more people start looking down on the hobby and im 100% positve it will eventually end in a ban and i personally like keeping hots

Umm, no. That is c. cerastes cerastes.....just like they stated.
"second that is a sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes) not a desert horned viper "
Who said it was a horned viper? They know, as well as most in here, what that snake is, and they hit the scientific name spot on. c. cerastes cerastes....sidewinder c. cerastes....horned viper.

C.cerastes cerastes. I think there are three currently recognized subspecies of Crotalus cerastes - C. cerastes cerastes, C. cerastes cercobombus, and C. cerastes laterorepens. So C. cerastes cerastes is the correct name for a Mojave sidewinder (accepted common name). Further, I don’t think that a lack of taxonomical knowledge automatically makes one unfit to keep venomous; nor does an intricate knowledge of taxonomy make one a fit or safe keeper. It makes one a taxonomist (either professional, amateur, or perhaps a poseur). A basic knowledge of taxonomy can be helpful. Most websites are loaded with innaccurate information, so the odd incorrect name is not one of the seven deadly sins. In most cases, common names are adequate (especially with a picture).
While the information can be quite helpful in the event of a bite (it is nice to know genus and species (locale information can be helpful as well)), common name and expert identification can be used to identify the most appropriate antivenom if you are bitten. Outside of medical treatment and scholarly pursuits, is it absolutely neccessary to keep up with taxonomy revisions? I have difficulty in keeping current, and I am exposed to this stuff on a fairly frequent basis.

C.cerastes cerastes. Yep, the Mojavi can be ID’ed by the 1st section of the rattle being brown. The other two have a black one.

C.cerastes cerastes. As long as you know you have a rattle snake not a viper ill be able to sleep better after comeing across this message i thought you were miss informed so i thought it was my duty to inform you some people get confused when it comes to subspeices names. i know some keepers that think the bitis rhinoceros is the name for a rhino viper lol very nice feeding pic i love rattle snakes right now i have a pair of western diamondbacks an eastern diamond back and a timber i keep a couple other speices of hots but the rattle snake is my favorit and theres no need for the middle finger link. it is important to know what you are careing for when it comes to temps, humidity, feeding, bites, breeding, information is the most important thing to have when it comes to animals and beleave it are not there are ALOT of amatuer keepers in the hobby

C.cerastes cerastes. And like i said in my first post with amatuers comes bites and with bites comes bans and Bites and bans are what im really afraid of i dident mean to insult you in any way but the keeping of hots by rookies is a touchy subject with alot of people. so i ask of you to be easy with the hostilliy theres no need for that i assume we are all adults here

C.cerastes cerastes. and to tjp before he throws his 2cents in i know c cerastes cerastes is a sidewinder but the majority of people will recognize c. cerastes as the desert horned viper not the side winder crotalus cerastes. now ill apologize once more for any misconception to my first post i didn’t mean you were a rookie keeper in any way and all i meant was to inform because that’s what these forums are for GIVING INFORMATION not giving people childish links to the middle finger now hopefully we can be done with this
