Going in Reverse First Mangrove Snake

I know this is not a great purchase to most people but I have been looking for a mangrove for a while and finally broke down and bought one. So far he is laid back and Early handled but I think the stress of the reptile show and being cool might be aiding in that we’ll see one he gets settled in. I love the looks of these little snakes and arboreal makes them even better.

He’s a little banged up but appears to be in great health 5 month captive so I’ll let him settle in and see how he does. Here’s a few quick pics I snapped tonight.

I’m definately pleased with this purchase The guy told me it ate F/T and he was not putting me on he ate a f/t mouse last night even after all the stress of the show. I’m relieved due to the problems I hear people having trying to get them to eat.

Just posting to bury a topic that should have stayed buried. Sorry but seen enough drama and the forum has been so laid back lately.

I’ve always loved those snakes. I dont own any hots but love every one I see. Are they mildly venomous like the hognose or more dangerous? Good luck with him.

Coondog,

I also don’t own any venomous, but I feel the same way you do. It also stinks that you can’t own hot herps in CT, or at least from everything I’ve found. I believe they are a bit more venomous than the hognose, but it depends which type of hognose. Easterns are very mild, not even hot really, then western and southern are a bit worse, and non-American species are more like a false water cobra, as far as I know. Mangroves are rear fanged, and the only recorded deaths from rear fangeds or Opisthoglyphs were boomslangs and twig snakes.

Thanks for clearing that up Eekster.

Hey, it is a cool snake. So it isn’t a Mamba or an albino Indian cobra.. but so what. I just got mine a couple weeks ago and it is waayy cool. The colors are striking, and, contrary to what I’ve seen posted elsewhere, it is not agressive.. at least not towards my SpecFor butt...!!!

Oh and Geckogirl...recheck your laws... rear_fanged are NOT considered dangerous under most state laws.. CT is fairly strict but I couldn’t find a listing...

I haven’t found laws regarding it, but I’ve read on some museum websites that keep hots that they’re illegal in CT. I didn’t think rear-fangeds were hots, because most can’t kill you unless you’re allergic. But our state is pretty strict, they don’t let you keep scorpions and tarantulas as far as I’ve read.
