 How to catch a weastern dimond back

from 7 to my present age14 iv coght many snakes in my area [marin right by san francisco] mostly king and garter snakes. i have incountered 2 dimond backs near mt.tam but the always get away. wen i pick them up with a stick they strik out i get freaked and drop it and its gone. can some 1 show me the correct way to catch thes guys?
