 HELP - BABY NOT EATING

PLEASE HELP!!! I’ve had my WD since hatchling, now 3. I added a new puppy to my home 2 wks ago & since then my dragon is on serious hunger strike. I’ve tried every type of worm, crickets, feeder fish, and his favorite food.. raspberries. Nothing. He ate one worm & a little plant dirt last week and one cricket 2 days ago. I’ve tried covering his cage, feeding him in another room, feeding him at different times. I began adding electrolyte supplement to water a couple days ago, but no affect. His eyes are bright and he is alert and active (as much as he ever was anyway), no change in color.

I am at a total loss & don’t know what to do. It would kill me to have to give him up, but I don’t want to starve him to death either. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

your wd sounds like it is upset by the new comer. you could let the your wd and puppy get to know one another. after all, the puppies scent is most likely all over you when you handle your lizard and feeding. your dragon doesn’t understand the new smell and noise.

 HELP - BABY NOT EATING

Give him time. Like Minya said, he doesn’t seem to like your new puppy. Its probably freaking him out quite a bit. Probably thinks he is going to get eaten by the puppy or something. I would just leave him alone for a couple days and then slowly start trying again. If you have your dragon in a room where you can close off, away from the puppy, I would do that, and then slowly start introducing them. (bring the puppy in the room.) They can go quite awhile without food, so I wouldn’t start freaking out yet. If you are really worried, go out and get some jump start and put some on the tip of his nose to see if he will lick it off...that will give him a little boost.

Thank you both so so much. "Freaking Out" is exactly what I have been doing. Two weeks seems like such a long time to go without eating, but he seems perfectly fine otherwise. Unfortunately his enclosure is too big to fit anywhere but the living room, but I’ll try covering it again for longer periods of time & see if that helps. I’m absoultely worried sick about him. Thought the puppy might not get a long with my other dog or my cat, but never crossed my mind that my WD would have a problem. Thanks again!

Well gee, looks like you beat me to it!
It might be an option to take puppy to another room while feeding?

I guess it depends on which you love more the Lizard or the puppy/dog?

Sorry didn’ mean it that way ...well maybe I did ....So now you have to cover up the lizard ....Hmmmm not in my house ...maybe you could feed them together side by side with each of their favorite items ....that way they could grow to be pals. And get matching leashes too. Go for walks together.

i wouldn’t cover the cage that will upset your lizard as well. don’t worry so about the not eating as its not due to illness but behavioral. try to introduce the lizard and puppy then go from there. keep us posted!

 HELP - BABY NOT EATING

No offense taken. I feel like an A** for stressing my baby out. I love the liz completely, he’s been with me since a hatch & I do walk him on a leash with my other dog with no prob, so don’t know why pup is causing such stress, but pup is also here to stay. He’s a $4,000 Coton de Tuleare if you can believe it & a B-day present from my Boss. Might lose my job if I got rid of it & then no body would be eating!!

p.s. Posted 2 new pics of his enclosure, moved him there about 6mos ago. Have since mounted lights & added much more green. He loves it, but am already building bigger viv. Like your pics, too. Possum is awesome.

Thanks, makes sense & it pains me to cover him. Not right to punish him because of the puppy. Just never imagined he would have a problem with the pup cuz he is fine with my other dog and my cat. I often watch tv with all 3 on the couch with. Think the pup is a little too hyper yet & does bark (my other doesn’t). Anyway, I’ll keep working at it & let you know when he finally decides to eat. ty!

Your lizard looks great.

Just asking a question for curiosity reasons...After looking at your photos...how do you keep the heat and humidity up in a wire viv like that? Just wondering, I have one of those mesh vivs for the time being and the humidity is a bit of a battle for me. Thanks

 HELP - BABY NOT EATING

Humidity is a bit of a problem, but I live in Florida so in spring & fall I leave windows open & it stays up easily on it’s own. In summer/winter when I need ac/heat, I keep a mister attachment on the water fountain, pump in his pool to keep water circulating, lots of live plants & moss, and mist him frequently. It requires a lot of monitoring & I want something bigger, so I am currently researching designs to build him a bigger better viv!

Did you check the enclosure post on this forum? Finners had started it and its title "Hey everyone lets make a large enclosure post, sense everyone wants pics of enclosures" or something similar to that :D

LOTS of awesome ideas and examples

 HELP - BABY NOT EATING

Well it took almost 5 WEEKS, but Charlie the CWD finally started eating again! New pup had a bad heart & had to have open heart surgery (don’t get me started). So I said if Charlie doesn’t eat while pup is gone for the week, he is going in to the vet as well. He remained active & alert & drinking & peeing for all this time, but he was finally starting to show weight loss. He would take a bite of rose petal now and again but nothing substantial.

I picked up the pup yesterday & made an appt. for Charlie to go in tomorrow. This morning I tried more baby food (sweet potatoes & chicken). He started eating & I grabbed some fresh worms & raspberries and he chowed down on about 15 worms & 1 berry (heavily vitamined of course)!!! I guess you can build up quite an appetite after 5 weeks!

I’m not sure if he saw the half naked puppy (shaved for surgery) & thought the same thing was up for him next if he didn’t eat, or he finally just got hungry enuf, but hopefully we are all back on the right track!

Thanks again to everybody for your support & advice.

You know I never thought of that, but like you said, who knows? Odd he would go all this time without eating & as soon as I bring pup back with good heart, he starts eating. Animals truly are amazing & people don’t give them enuf credit. Phew is right! You have no idea how good it is to have ALL my boys healthy again! Thanks again & again for your words of wisdom!

 HELP - BABY NOT EATING

YAY! didn’t see the post before but thats great that he is eating again, sorry about the pup good to hear he is ok though...

Maybe he saw the puppy as a threat and wouldnt eat but now all shaven the puppy might feel a little... not so wild... so the water dragon would notice that he isn’t all vicious looking anymore...

I dont know either but hey good to hear about the two doing all right!

YAY
