Help with my water dragons :D

hey breeze n rob here we own two water dragons...
not sure how old n not sure what sex altho we were told at the pet
shop that ren is a girl n stumpy is the boy....we got these
lil characters on the 29th April 08 previous to them we had
a baby water dragons which unfortunately died after 6
weeks of having him/her...no idea why s/he died. got a few
problems with these new ones...stumpy is missing about 2’’ of
his tail and his back left leg is swollen and pussing white stuff not
to sure what to do we told the pet shop where we got them
from n they sed not to take him to the vet but to just take
him to them...so we did all he did was stuck a needle in
his leg and squeezed some of the stuff out...but as
expected it just keeps filling up...not sure what to do as i
cant find any reptile specialist near here....now ren has been nose
rubbing for ages at the pet shop still does accationally now only the
front of tank is glass. and now has a sore bit we
are treating that with repti wound healing aid that ok? there wernt
in that good condition when we got them missing spines etc....there temp
is 85f in day and roughly 75f at night...change water twice daily
we are having to spray the tank at least 10 times a day
to keep the humidity up to 80...any ideashow we could solve
that so we don’t have to keep spraying....they
eat meal worms and crickets soon to be locusts n small fish....anyone on
here with some info for us we would be grateful to hear from...
have added a few pix of them both more clearer ones will be added soon....oh one other thing lol is it normal for them both to be climbing on top of each other drives me mad...thanx

both ren’s back legs look bad. you need to get him on some antibiotics right away. of course the butt sniff will return, they only drained some of it, but didn’t treat the infection. call a vet even if your not able to get to a specialist. ask them for some antibitics and get some antibiotic save on that wound. once that infection becomes systemic, you will lose him.

i’m sorry - Stumpy. No. The healing aid will not be enough at this point. The wound is infected and Stumpy needs antibiotic. The other leg is badly swollen - what is that from? In the picture, the entire left leg is swollen, but the injury is on the right foot.

Glad you got stumpy to the vet. That is the best thing for him. Baytril is a broad spectrum antibiotic so it should work, but it sounds like the vet knows what they are doing. Culturing it if the baytril doesn’t work is a good idea.

From your pictures, both dragons look female, but its really really hard to tell from those pictures. Approx. how long are they?? They usually start to show secondary sex charecteristics at around 18-24 inches.

i am soo glad i joined this site liek i sed i was just gonna leave it and hope that it would heal itself...yh i spoke to the vet n she training in specialising in reptiles so thats good....both mine are together and not very big....not sure what sex they are lol have looked at the pores n all i seem to see it a yellow line on each of there inner thigh...i’d say ’’shes’’ if it is....is about 10’’ from snout to end of tail and ’’hes’’ would be about 11ish’’ from snout to tail end if he didnt loose most of his tail...she has a smaller frame to him hes quite chunky....i dont think(i hope not) they are two male as they are quite close and neither is trying to be harder than the other as they both climb on top of eachother for a past time....i have noticd that ’’he’’ will sit on his branch wave and head bob and puff throat slightly....’’she’’ sits and takes no notice...this a good thing or bad....one other thing i have caught them both on diff times looks as tho they are nose butting the other ones head but im not sure if there licking or nosebutting lol.....they do this tho

looks like a glass cage you have them in?..
sorry, i looked but i didn’t absorb, i’m exhausted..

but if that is indeed glass, put up about 4-6 inches of white paper along the bottom of the cage like this:

when i got enid he had some real bad snout damage, the man i purchased him from told me that he had everything he needed and that the snout rubbing was normal.. it stopped the instant i put the paper up

it looks like you got a pretty good setup. no one will slate you on this list, everyone is pretty nice. lizards cannot see glass. so when she jumps into the glass, she doesn’t see anything there. one way people fix this is to let the dried water spots build up on the inside of the glass. you have some at the bottom, but not at the top. so maybe that’s why she is climbing up and jumping. be sure to start spraying water at the top of the glass.

There’s not a ton you can do about the snout rub at this point except for trying to mark up that glass a little so your dragons can see it and hopefully won’t try to escape ’through’ it. A larger enclosure will also help with the snout rub.

To help clear up the wound you can apply a little Polysporin or Neosporin to the wound once or twice a day...just make sure you get the stuff without painkillers in it. It won’t heal the wound, but it will help keep any infection out which will help the wound heal on its own.

Great job on getting to the vet...I too received a dragon needing attention and for me going tho the vet was the best money I could ever spend. I was prescribed baytril also for 21 days.. but I was instructed to give it orally with the needle removed. Poor Buddy hated the taste and I even attempted to inject his food instead.

As far as your specific questions...I see you have a display case very much like mine... I use Repti bark / coconut husk bedding which I soaked in water ...completely covered the bottom of the case about 1.5 - 2 inches...it worked great ...humidity was up around 75- 85% depending on how much moisture I added daily ..When I got home from work it was only as low as 60%.... I always hand feed and use a dish for worms and such...disabled the crickets to keep in the dish. At times i would clear a spot just for a pinkie or goldfish.

I did have a knat out break due to the introduction of live potted plants, but solved that by taking all the items out and drying the bark in the sun for a day or 3 and reusing it.

You have a nice case I like the ventilation things you have I need some of those...

When I had the knat outbreak I used towels soaked in water and then wrung out slightly so as not to drip ...then I micro waved them for 2-3 minutes until steamy placed inside for a steam bath effect ...that works for a while and then when cool they still have moisture. i think Minya told me about that ...great idea.

Nice to see you doing well with your critters and we all wish you success.
Have you seen this site ... we go here for some good info
Link

Tricia recommends raising the temps at night to about 82 when lizards are ill with respiratory illness and I think that is wise in this case too. Same antibiotics are used to treat RI, stomatis ( mouth rot) and just about any infection. After all is well you can resume regular temps. I never like my temps to go below 78 at night .

Also please provide a basking spot of 88-92 degrees F for proper basking and digestion of food. They will go in and out of this area as they feel the need for it.

Keep the water as clean as possible to prevent re -infection. Also Beta dine solution is a great topical antibiotic germ killer....must be diluted with water until a light tea color is achieved. Use sterile gauze soaked and wrap the leg if you can. I am gonna make Band-Aids with a lizard icon ...I swear ...lol

Your local feed and hay supply for horses will have a wonderful wrap for horses legs. This works great as I have seen on this forum here. Usually blue or pink in color. Kinda of like a soft cast wrap. HMMM where is that picture...POCOCHU had her lizard’s tail wrapped with it.And she posted a pic.

OK that’s enough for now I will get blisters on my fingers....lol
Best of luck
CP
