Just brought my Juvenile Water dragon home

Hello! I’m new to the forum I just brought my new baby water dragon, Cosmo, home. I had a green iguana growing up, and I’ve always been fascinated reptiles, especially lizards! I’ve been referred to as ’the lizard queen’ by friends and family since I was hunting down lizards and snatching iguanas twice my size since I was 6! Haha.. Cosmo is now all set in in his 4x2x2 custom built cage! Hopefully we will be building him/her a bigger and better environment, as my boyfriend’s work has a lot of great tools for building. I’ve done my research and hopefully I’ll be a great ’parent’ with the information I’ve obtained.

I have one question... Maybe someone can help?

I live close to the beach and I ride my bike all the time. I figured in a couple months or whenever I see that Cos is comfortable with me and his new home, he could ride down with me to the beach as I used to bring my iguana with me all the time. Lizzy, my iguana, loved it. I’m wondering if Cos would be the same. There are trees and shade and I could bring him some food. If he can go, do you think he would be able to go in the water with me. Lizzy loved the ocean every once in a while. I know dragons can go under, so do you think I could just hold him in there with his little harness? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I’m a beach bum and thought it would be nice for him to get out Hopefully he’ll get plenty of outdoor experience, because that’s usually where I am! Parks, beaches, bike rides! Sooo excited! Does anyone have experience with taking their dragons outside and using a leash?

I’m so happy to have found this forum for hands on experience and advice! This site is great, and I’ve already found so much useful, interesting information here! Anyway, thanks for reading and I look forward to interacting with everyone!

Dalia

And of Course Cosmo <3

i don’t think the beach would be a problem. dunno if i would put him in the water. if he should swallow it that would be bad. watch out for the gulls because they would look at your dragon as a very nice meal.

congrats on your new little one!!

Can’t see the pics right now (somethings up with the server I think) but welcome to our forum!! Don’t know anything about the beach thing either but I bet it would be cool to do if able! I used to have a parakeet that rode on my shoulder while I rode my bike all over town, it was so much fun and really cool that Star had that much trust with me that she didn’t fly away. Good Luck!!

Wow Kitara! How cool :) I used to do the same with my iguana, Lizzy. He loved going out with me, and never once tried to jump or freaked out. A bird, though?! Awesome! :)

HEY! Welcome to the forum, lots of friendly peoples here...

Hee hee, I am sure we all know about being calle "the lizard queen" its a popular nickname around here too!

Oh I am so happy to hear that you got his big cage all done before getting him *jumps up and down* yay!

As for taking them outside, I have read that outside really spooks them, all the birds flying above, all the noises. I beleive I read that they get scared really easily when outside.
As for the salt water..... not sure.... I am thinking your in california?? Just trying to get an idea of the water temperature... the beach here would freeze their little bodies....

I would probably wait till he is much much larger to take him somewhere like the beach.... just because of how populated it is and it could be stressful to a young one...

But outside like in the yard would be good....
I have also heard bad news about the leashes.... that because when water dragons get scared or whatever they will do the death roll like alligators do and they can spin and break their spine on the little leash tightener ball thing......
Be sure he is comfortable in it and doesn’t struggle... because that could be a bad sign that he will get mad at it later...

I cant see your pictures either :(:(

HI!

Hi Yexalen! :) Yess I did my research before I got my little guy as I want him to be as happy as possible! I’m in Florida, so it’s warm year-round here. Thanks for all the info! I will start by taking Cosmo outside in my back yard... see how he likes it. And I’m glad you told me about the issue with leashes and water dragons. I will ahve to see how he likes those as well!

Thanks again, everyone, for all your info and for welcoming me here :)

Maybe now you can see the pictures? ^-^ My little Cosmo

Hmmm... how long is cosmo? He looks like he may be a cosma..... just because of the length in the last pic....

How long is he?? I may be wrong he just looks like by that length you would see more male features....

could just be the camera angle :D

VERY cute pictures! He looks very bright :D

Cosmo is about 14 inches long, Yexalen. I have been wondering what sex Cossie is! He looks like a male to me based on his ’bumps’ lol...I originally thought my WD was female, and was going to name her Kiwi. However, my boyfriend told me the dragon wouldn’t be cool if it was a girl... lol It had to be a boy... guys are weird :p so I just went along with boy instead of referring to Cos as him/her haha

So, with the given length, what do you think? Do I have a boy or girl?

Thanks again :)

Dalia

Well 14 inches you MIGHT MIGHT be able to tell but not likely, I just thought he looked longer....do you have underside pictures maybe?

He could definately still be male at that size... :D

No I’ll have to post one up and see what everyone thinks... I would do it now but he has been a little jumpy and weird the last couple days, so I think he wants more time to adjust... We’re gonna try to keep handling at a minimum for a couple weeks. I need to control myself! I keep wanting to take him out, and forgetting he’s not my old iguana who was used to me....

Unfortunately CWD never will be like an Iguana ...much more skittish and easily stressed.
Subject to bolting and running with no thought to height or distance as they do that instinctively in the wild.

I too have wished the same. But I am content to get in the backyard.
Did you say you were in Florida..? heck just go get a monitor from the wild ...youngster and get a leash! ....lol
