HPS and MVB lightling question
I ask because there is a sort of hardware/liquidation store here (Princess Auto if you’re in Canada) that has 100 watt HPS lights on sale for $9.99 and 80 watt MVB lights for I think $6.99 and was wondering if it was worth picking a couple up. I’d mainly be using them for heat as I have fluorescent UVB bulbs set up and in use, but I’m thinking a little extra might not hurt. I’m about due to change out my UVB bulbs anyways, so I’m a little curious to see if one of those bulbs would perk my lizards up a bit with the fresh UVB. Oh yeah, and there isn’t a problem with running them through a dimmer switch is there? |

as for a little extra, yes - that can hurt. you can over-radiate your lizard and make them sick. not sure i understand the dimmer switch. how would you be using it and on what light? very good questions!!! |

Secondly, MVB light made for reptiles have a special phosphor chemical coating which produce UVB in the proper range for reptiles. A typical MVB for outdoor lighting would have to be measured with a meter to determine if any UVB was being emitted. Not worth risking your animals health just hoping it did. For additional heat any flood light can be used , some of the new low energy flood lights which essentially output the same light /heat are excellent choices for supplemental heat. All the companies producing MVB for reptiles have various qualities of out put. I wish they could all get standardized, but that isn’t happening. However, Mega Ray reportedly has made great strides in making the best quality MVB and encourages you to call the company directly to personally work out your specific enclosure situation. I think that says alot about their company! They also have done exclusive testing on all the various bulbs and have documented the findings. Link Do check out the link. : ) |

Also, the plan isn’t to eliminate the need for my fluorescent UVB lights...I’m more thinking about using them for heating, particularly if they get hotter than incandescent lights like halogens do. A little extra UVB wouldn’t hurt my situation, I don’t think. I realize that these are just regular bulbs I’m looking at and they’re not really intended for what I’d be using them for, but lots of my stuff starts out this way. I’ll check out that link as well, thanks! |

MVB and Fluorescent lights of any kind can not be used on a dimmer ....why, because they all work on a ballast device either internal(in the base) or in the fixture (external) and require full wattage to operate. I did try it on a CFB (curly repti sun 10.0) ...I plugged it in accidentally to my dimmer and it just flickered. |
