 Diet Questions

Hi everyone i have a question about how good it would be to use minnows/feeder fish for my water dragon as a main source of food....I just purchased today a scoop of crappie minnows and my waterdragon aka "King" seemed to absolutely love them! He (at least i believe its a he) ate 6 minnows today and it was the first time i have ever gave him minnows, so im glad he ate them. I was just wondering if it can be bad to feed him minnows all the time? I have a separate fish tank that i am keeping the minnows in for as long as i need to so i figured it would be nice only having to buy minnows every other week or so. He seems to love them. and would it be ok to feed him pinkie mice and minnows? he wont get too much of one vitamin or anything would he?

Also, i was wondering what the pros and cons would be if i decided to breed mice for feeding my water dragon....I want to do this because i am sick of running to the pet store every week. I want to be able to feed him pinkie mice more constantly and the thought of breeding mice doesn’t seem that hard to do. Does anyone do this for their water dragon? if so how often do the mice have a litter of babies? I have heard they r fast breeders....any help or ideas is appreciated

thanks

 Diet Questions

Minnows are high in fat and low in nutrition. Also since they usually are housed with so many fish and in crammed tanks, they are usually all covered in parasites. Minnows are great as a snack/treat, but not as a staple diet unfortunately.

Mice are great and should cover about 30%-40% of their diet, but again shouldn’t be the only thing fed to them. They also do make it hard on their digestive systems. I’d say a pinky-fuzzy once or twice a week, and bugs every other day.

they are fast breeders, but if your just breeding them for the one dragon then it will in the long run be more costly and more work than you intended it to be. Remember mice need to drink and eat as well. As well as poop and have their bedding changed. They also stink lol.

A more practical way in my opinion is to purchase them online through a mice supplier. The large pet stores get their stock from these exact suppliers (though smaller ones do breed their own) and boost up the price. Get them frozen instead of live, and if kept frozen they should last you a pretty good while!

hope that helps

 Diet Questions

Hey thanks a lot for your response, if i got mice i would be breeding them for my dragon and a friends lizards too...he has a bearded dragon and a few others so we both would be benefiting from the pinkies. I don’t have a problem taking care of a few mice, i have the time and the room so that’s not going to be an issue. Thanks for the information on the minnows, i never thought of the fact that they would have parasites or anything....my dragon seems to love them tho so ill keep giving them as treats every now and then...

How do you feel about nightcrawlers being a main part of my dragons diet? Nightcrawlers, minnows, and pinkies a good all around diet? I dont have much access to crickets but i get them when i can, i have to drive almost an hour away to get crickets so im just trying to figure out my best option for keeping my dragon well fed. Thanks for any input.

hmm how do you feel about buying crickets online? they get delivered right to your door and are usually 50% cheaper than at your store.

nightcrawlers are good, though they are fattening so i wouldn’t like feed them only that.

What about superworms? those are great staples if you dont like crickets.

Oh also for bearded dragons, mice aren’t good for them, its too much for them to digest and if i remember right, it does bad things to their kidney or something. Its great for beardies who have MBD, or are gravid but not everyday. At most one small pinky every 2 weeks.

hey if you want to breed mice what do you think about getting a snake?

hmmm ya good idea, i just looked online at some prices on crickets and they seem very reasonable i might have to do that. I have tried super worms in the past and only got my dragon to eat 1 of them and hasnt touched them since, must not like em. but i know my buddy has leopard geckos too and i know that they eat pinkies everyonce and awhile dont they? and about getting a snake....might not be a bad idea if i can get mice to breed like crazy....i know if i started to get more pinkies then i needed i was planning on freezing them and stocking up.

nighcrawlers are very good and very high in calcium (not sure where they are fattening comes from, but they are not).

you can try - silk worms and horned worms, roaches, etc., and breed them too.

there have been other conversations on feeding minnows beyond the treat phase. i think conclusion was that you can feed them if you get a parasitic water treatment to clean them out.

 Diet Questions

Hey Minya thanks for the response, So you say nightcrawlers are a good solid diet for water dragons? I know that nightcrawlers were probably 90% of my dragons diet over this summer and he did great and healthy all summer...he ate like 5 or so at a time. Do you have anymore information on minnows? or do you know where the past conversations are about it so i can read it? Thanks

nightcrawlers are good in calcium, but contain mostly water though. Not sure, i’ve never heard from anyone who said they were not fat though lol.

I think what we’re all getting at is, yah this food is great! but no one food should take up more than 40% of their average diet.

hey King - sometimes your dragon will only eat one type of food for a while. the nightcrawlers don’t really have any fat, so giving supers would be good to keep the weight up. jade would only eat nightcrawlers too and she was thin. now, she’s eating supers and putting on a nice belly.

sorry, the conversation was on here so its probably in the archives somewhere, but here is a website i found for you about feeders and how to care for them. in particular, here is an excerpt about the parasites:

Quote:

Treating "Feeder Fish:"
The only downside to these fish is that, since they are sold as "feeder fish" or "bait," they usually have parasites and other health problems due to overcrowding and poor care. Medications and good care can reverse this. Pick apparently healthy fish with which to begin. To treat a newly bought batch of rosy reds, I used Aquari-Sol by Aquarium Products, Inc. at half dose (I have soft water) for four or five days in a 5 gallon quarantine tank where they remained for two weeks. I vacuumed water off the bare bottom daily and used a corner filter. Salt levels of about 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons were used initially but diluted with the daily water changes. Extend the quarantine if any fish die.
