 Hey Guys,

Water Dragons are great lizards! Fatten Gizmo up some, as a good health indicator for lizards is the thickness at the base of a lizards tail. My Dragon, Sid Vicious, loves earthworms, pinky mice, guppy’s & goldfish which he catches in a shallow water bowl.

 Hey Guys,

Hi Psinic,

Welcome to the WD forum...we have a post for new wd owners loaded with great info and links go there and just read, read, read..(I’ll bump it to the top of the page for you) and if you have ANY questions no matter how dumb.....PLEASE just ask any ways......

Your little guy looks so cute...but a word of advice..DITCH the bark..they can eat it and get plugged up...Your better off going with reptile carpet or paper towels....

Why don’t you give us a quick run down on your set up so we can make sure you have every thing right so you have a healthy & happy dragon...and a happy owner too....

What are your temps and humidity levels?

What are you using for heat?

What are you using for lighting? Do you have a UVB bulb? and What kind is it?

What is the CWD’s diet? What are you feeding him?

What size is your enclosure?

Annie...>^..^<

 Hey Guys,

Hey,

Thanks for the welcomes guys . Much appreciated, as is all the advice.

Annie, thanks for the tip on the bark chippings. My local reptile store, (where I bought him), keep all theirs on bark and told me I should keep it moist. Should I also keep the paper towels or reptile carpet moist?

I am feeding the little guy on medium silent crickets, and am going to try suplimenting these with some fruit, raspberries to start with. Will also change the diet to meal worms and locusts etc to keep it interesting. As i have cornsnakes i already have pinkies, so will also try them as he gets bigger. The reptile store told me to dust the crickets once a week with Nutrobal, which is a calcium an multivitamin supliment for reptiles?

His enclosure is currently about 4 foot long, by just over a foot high and just over a foot deep. From what I have read i think this is too small, but again is what was supplied.. Am I right in thinking he needs a taller enclosure so he can climb?

He has a dog’s bowl half filled with water to drink and bath, a wooden ’log’ type hide in the cool end, (where he spent his first night) and an imitation rock hide which doubles as his basking rock under the heat lamp. Then he has a nice big piece of branch to climb on and some fake fern stuff along the rear of his enclosure.

I have a Reti Glo 5.0 UVB strip light on the roof of the cool end, and his basking/heat lamp is a 60W yellow reflector Lamp. I have a concern here as this lamp hangs about 5-6 inches above the basking rock and Im worried he might get too hot or even burn himself. Is this too close? Then I have a heat mat attached to the outside rear wall of his enclosure which spans about 2/3 of the length. Currently I have both lights on from 8AM till about 6.30PM, then turn them off and turn the heat mat on overnight. The average day temp is around 90 degrees, but last night the night temp only dropped to about 80. This isn’t low enough is it? I might try not turning the mat on tonight.

Lastly, i have no humidity gauges a the moment, but yesterday one of the front glass doors had condensation down it, so i think it’s quite humid. Will get a gauge for this asap.

Thanks,

Psinic.

 Hey Guys,

water dragons will climb as high as they can and higher!
spraying down his cage twice a day should be fine
good luck getting him to eat fruit (mine never did)
be careful with aquariums/cages with a glass front as they tend to rub their noses on the glass which can cause bad problems for their nose. i think it has to do visibility
when i kept my water dragon, i used a screen cage (reptarium); which seems like it would be worse but he actually really enjoyed being able to climb all over the walls.

Dont worry to much though, water dragons are amazing animals, and they are very undemanding in my opinion

 Hey Guys,

Hi and Welcome!!!

Gizmo is sure a cutie pie:) your more than welcome to ask any questions.

i see that Gizmo has some snout damage and may have a bit of mouth rot. you need to disinfect his snout with some betadine solution if you have it. dilute it to a tea color with some water first. you need to swab out his top "gums". they look puffy to me and may be infected a bit. we need to discuss snout rubbing prevention techniques if you like.

on another note, gizmo’s long bones look fantastic. his lower jaw looks snubbed, but that may be due to the mouth infection.

 Hey Guys,

Eek.. really - oh no i was worried about that.. Will he recover? He will not allow me anywhere near him at the moment and goes completely scatty if i try and grab him... Any ideas how to administer it without stressing him out to much? Will chemists carry betadine?

 Hey Guys,

yeah, it can get much worse, but he can recover. the chemist should have betadine and if not, then use triple antibiotic ointment (but only on the outside of his mouth). one of the best things you can get is some Silvadene / Silver Sulphide ointment. you will have to get this from a vet - i think because not sure if your chemist will sell it in UK.

you can put some ointment (or the betadine on a q-tip) and dab onto the wound. you should start treating this right away - its pretty swollen.

 Hey Guys,

Not sure what kind of stores you have in the UK..but you might be able to find it in a pharmacy.....or if you have a feed store like for cattle & horses sometime they carry it...

Far as stressing him out at this time it can’t be avoided..Just wrap him in a towel and dip a Q-tip/swab in the iodine and clean his mouth and lips with it.....

You know another thing you might think about is making him a vet appointment and let a vet look him over and do a fecal test on him for parasites...
If he does have mouth rot you can get some Nolvasan (chlorhexidine diacetate) That works really good on mouth rot and other things too..I use it all the time....

 Hey Guys,

yes, you can use the betadine on his gums as long as its diluted to a tea color. you should do this every evening for 10 days.

 Hey Guys,

Hi guys,

OK - i returned to the pet store today to inform them that they had sold me a dragon with a problem. The owner came out to see me and apologised. She has said that if i try and help him myself, and i dont see any improvement in a couple of days, i can take him back and they will take him to the vet for me.

Meanwhile, I have found and bought iodine and diluted it to a weak tea colour, then managed to catch him!! He was a real good boy! My girlfriend tried with a towel from one end of his viv, and he ran right into my hands. Once I had him he was calm and peaceful - even sat on my hand for a while when I put him back in :-)

Anyway, we used a cotton bud and gave his snout a good wash with it - couldn’t open his mouth as i didn’t want to hurt him, but washed down the sides of his jaws. The photos do make this look worse and darker than it does in the flesh - but here are some more pictures taken with my rubbish phone camera...

By the way the chemists here are rubbish - once I mentioned that the iodine was for a pet they refused to sell it to me... I had to send my girlfriend in for it...

Thanks,

Psinic.

 Hey Guys,

It looks to me like he’s got some snout rub.....(rubbing his nose back and forth on the glass tank)..Does he rub his nose on the tank he’s in right now?

The dark on there looks like it might be some old shed on there....sometimes if they don’t shed right it builds up on the nose area and looks bad.....Keep doing the iodine treatments once a day. You can take the swab and get in between his lips..the iodine won’t hurt him if he get some in his mouth....I doubt very much if it is mouth rot..he really doesn’t look bad at all..I’ve seen MUCH worse....

He looks so cute sitting in your hand..poor little guy they just stress out so bad when you do anything to them...Mine act like I’ve killed them and just lay there playing dead...LOL...

 Hey Guys,

Thanks Pocochu,

Thats made me feel alot better - No he doesn’t rub very much at all in his new viv - but at the store he was in a smaller enclosure wih 2 others - so i guess he got it there.. I have temporarily stuck a band of duck tape along the bottom of his glass door’s so he can’t see out when he is sitting on the floor, and so hopefully see’s it as a barrier not a way out! I am also going to buy a bigger 4" high enclosure for him this week I think.

 Hey Guys,

thanks for the pictures, what a sweet little baby you have there!!! he doesn’t look bad at all. its funny, but they really know when your trying to help them:)

not so sure about him not having mouth rot. his upper "lips" are really swollen back to the eyes. he may have some gunk in there - lots of stuff can get trapped in there, but its easily enough to clear up. his snout looks pretty bruised, do the best you can keeping his snout clean. you should try some antibiotic ointment on the tip of his snout after you disinfect with the iodine it will help soften up all that old shed as well.

amazing that the chemist wouldn’t sell you the iodine!!!!

 Hey Guys,

sorry to double post, but the snout doesn’t look like typical snout rub to me it looks like there are some deep lacerations. please try to get some antibiotic ointment and give that baby lots of love.

 Hey Guys,

Thanks guys.

Today his snout actually looks a little better - looks lighter in colour. Swabbed again with iodine. Also got rid of the bark chips and put some reptile carpet down.

Anyone got any tips on how to open his mouth a little to swab in there? He keeps his mouth firmly shut, and i have tried to tease them open with the swab - he don’t like it!!

 Hey Guys,

that’s great! try to insert the swab at the corner of his mouth. or if your really gentle, you can pull the skin a bit under his jaw. he sure won’t like it though. like annie said, wrap him in a towel to keep the struggling down.

 Hey Guys,

Hey,

OK - we are now 6 days into Giz’s daily Iodine nose wash :-) Thanks for the tips here they have been really helpful. I have now managed to get inside his lips and swab them out as well. Also today he bit me for the first time as i thnk he is getting a little fed up with these treatments But this enabled me to see right inside his mouth and good news. Nice and pink, no placque, no white spots, not dark spots - all looks real good inside.

His nose is now starting to look much better, but to be sure today i started also putting a little antibiotic ointment on the outside of his snout. Below are pictures of a very angry looking Gizmo, with a cute white creamy snout... Bless him...
