Nose abscess? Help D: It has been awhile since I was last on here. I feel bad cause I’m coming back with a problem! My 18" CWD Naomi has mysteriously developed a strange lump behind her right nostril. I cannot find my camera to take a picture of it right now, but I will once I find it! It isn’t red or anything, it’s just a lump. I have caught her nose rubbing from time to time, but she hasn’t done any damage and I let her out every few days to burn off her excess energy. She finished her shed a week ago, is it possible that the dead skin over her nostril didn’t leave or something? I don’t see anything there and she never had trouble shedding before. She is otherwise eating well and just as active as normal.
The day temp is 80-90, the night temp is about 75. Humidity ranges from 45%-80%. It falls overnight and when I am at school, but I mist them 3 times a day. Their water is deep enough for them to submerse themselves and I change it daily. Their enclosure is handmade, 6ft L X 4ft T X 2.5ft W with glass fronts and screened top. The substrate is 1/2 nothing (where their food is) and 1/2 6" deep sterile top soil. The other dragon, Deimos, is perfectly healthy and they get along whenever I’m in the room! Any ideas?
I can’t take her to a vet until the weekend because the closest exotics vet lives back home in St. Louis (2 hr drive). I have olive oil and an optic cream that my vet gave me when Deimos was having trouble shedding around the eyes. Should I use either one?
Thanks everyone :D

Nose abscess? Help D: Well it maybe an abscess....you might want to try and hot pack it to see if you can bring it to a head...but if it is an abscess you really need to get her on some antibiotics....I would go ahead and make an appointment to take her to the vet....

Nose abscess? Help D: Okay, I gave her a luke warm bath last night and put some Epi-Otic on it. She doesn’t react when I touch it so it probably isn’t an abscess. I know from working at a vet clinic that abscesses usually get you bitten or scratched or something because they are very painful. I’ll give her another warm bath today and see what happens. If it doesn’t clear up by Thursday night I’ll make an appointment for her Friday when I go home to visit my parents in St. Louis. Thanks!

Nose abscess? Help D: Ok, I finally found my camera and cable. I gave both dragons a nice luke warm bath this morning and applied the epi-otic to Naomi’s bumb. It definitely looks worse today. It’s pinker and she opened her mouth when I was rubbing the antibiotic on it so I think it might be sore now? She didn’t eat quite as well this morning but handling her scares her half to death so I’m not surprised that she wouldn’t eat. In one of the pictures it looks like the nose is plugged up maybe? She does have a little bit of nose rub because I just moved her into a new enclosure with a glass front. I have put colored paper around the bottom to get her to stop but she hasn’t healed from it yet. Her feet are a bit disbcolored becuase she still has a bit of unshed skin on them that I have been working off with olive oil.
Also, at feeding time this morning Deimos, my male, showed the first aggression towards Naomi I’ve seen. He tail whipped her actually, and I wasn’t happy with him at all. But I did noticed that Naomi’s throat is a bit red. Is she a he? I can’t take under body shots right now cause I don’t want to stress he/she out too much!

Nose abscess? Help D: skin/shed is plugging up the nostril and bacteria is able to form inside. you’ve got to get your humidity up to the right level and clear that nostril. you can use a regular sewing needle to poke through that dead skin. you have to be very very careful not to poke anything inside - just the skin so air can get into that nostril cavity. wrap her in a towl to keep the struggling down.
your going to have to move on this quickly. she needs to be on antibiotics to clear up that infection.

Nose abscess? Help D: Actually, I just went in to check on her again, and the dried scale has come off. Now her nostril looks like the one on the other side and it is draining a little bit. The bump is still there though. That’s good right? Should I put any pressure on it to get any butt sniff out? With a hot towel or something? Are there any antibacterials you suggest that I can get? My mom is a vet (just not reptile specialist) and she can write a prescription if need be. The closest exotics vet is in St. Louis (2 hrs away) where my family lives, but I won’t be able to head home till tomorrow. I can get a vet appointment for her though. I think.

Nose abscess? Help D: okay, I was just reading my previous post and I meant to say "Should I put any pressure on it to get any out?" I have no idea why I typed "butt sniff"...
I spoke to my mom just now and she is getting me some baytril, which is the suggested antibiotic for water dragons. Any other ideas?

Nose abscess? Help D: Baytril is fine....but you have to watch it..it’s killer on the kidneys.....is it oral or injectable?
I’d keep hot packing it and see if it won’t come to a head....but if it draining from the nose it may all ready be opened....Just get her on the baytril......

Nose abscess? Help D: that’s great the nostril is opened up. phew! if its draining then its already opened up and the oral would be best in this case. put some baytril on the tip of her snout and let her lick it off instead of forcing it down her throat. this way the medication can get get up to the roof of her mouth. make sure she stays well hydrated. poor little baby... other than the abscess, your dragons look great - in fact, beautiful! please keep us posted on the progress. your a good mommy:)

Nose abscess? Help D: I gave Naomi baytril (mixed in syrup to lessen the horrible bitterness of the stuff). It was a bit of a fight, but I think some of it might have touched the roof of her mouth! I caught her completely submersing herself a few times so I’m pretty sure she’s drinking something. She looks nice and plump. The abscess looks a little better today, I think it’s smaller.
Diemos is not getting along with her at all right now though. I don’t know what to do about it! I think Naomi might be a guy too. I’ll try and get some pictures up once her nose is a little better. I’ll have to find a new home for her once her nose is all better. I don’t want to do that though! I love her!
Thanks everyone!

Nose abscess? Help D: oh, good. i’m sure she did get it around her mouth. they sure don’t like the stuff that’s for sure. hang in there. it probably hurts too that’s why she’s submerging herself. i’m so glad its looking better: )
diemos looks male and naomi looks female to me. just a guess though. they’re still small.
can’t wait for the pix!!!
