heres a pic of the setup i have.. definitely looking to upgrade soon. i could use some suggestions =)

i was told at the pet store that they were almost sure it was a male, but couldn’t be sure until it has reach a certain age.

the lights are by eco-terra. the day light is 50w and the night is 75w which was recommanded to me by the people at the pet store.

his diet right now is mainly large crickets, wax worms, and meal worms. he’s never eats any fruits or veggies i leave or try to feed him (apples, mangos etc..) i always hear about the calcium powder but have no idea where to buy it or what brands to buy.

thanks on all the feedback and inquiries we really appreciate all the support and help =)

as far as calcium powder, All major pet retail stores sell it. Just ask for it. The brands don’t matter much, just make sure it doesn’t have D3 added to it as well, which most do. water dragons produce D3 themselves.

For example I use "Jurassi Cal" from petsmart.

Maybe I missed it but do you have a uvb light?

On the diet don’t feed too many wax worms( they should only be a treat) they are very fattening....try and go with superworms or silkworms...Crx are ok but they are very high in phosphorus (phosphorus is hard on the kidneys)...so easy on the crx...mealworms are ok but not on a daily bases....they are hard to digest because of they hard outer shell... Have you tried a new born baby pinkie mouse?..he’s big enough for one...

 Meet "Money"

Lou ,

I am sorry to say ...do not trust all that the pet store folks tell you ...especially when it comes to UVB

here’s the skinny real fast ...I am leaving out details...sorta

First if it does not specifically say on the package UVB somewhere...it does not have it ...period!

UVB / UVA / UV are not the same thing...they are all different and separate. The bulb you need for UVB which imitates the suns ability to produce calcium in bones is a must have or your dragon will become weak and sick...MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) will set in and he / she will have brittle / broken bones and spinal / tail deformities as well as jaw / mouth issues.

Please make sure you get a UVB long florescent tube made by Repti Sun...the 10.0 is preferable ... or if you want you can read all about UVB and reptile lighting here...

MEGA RAY

If you can’t get this type of lighting soon you can take your dragon outside for some direct sunshine for about 20-60 minutes 3x a week ...that will be very good medicine for him until you get some artificial lights as the weather is turning cold ...

Glass and screen block UVB ..so some type of method must be used to have open ...yet contained exposure...1/4" hardware cloth is OK, window screen will block about 50-60% of the UVB. 20-30 minutes outside is equal to about 12 hours of artificial light. Especially on bright sunny days at 10am-2pm....make sure the temps are right if you do this ...don’t want yer baby to catch a cold...nor do we want to fry it as glass can magnify temps drastically...

Hope you get all your answers soon ....there are many how ill help ....welcome!

wow i feel bad for depriving my baby of his uvb !! those ppl at the pet store had me believe i had everything i needed..i just bought a repti sun 10.0 uvb off ebay. so the question i have now is, does this new bulb replace my old day time bulb ? or do i alternate between the two ? like how many hours of uvb light and regular light bulb do i gave him ?

do you guys know where i can get those superworms maybe online ? my pet store only carry’s wax and meal worms.. also i tried to feed him a pinky and he didn’t really go for it lol same thing with the small comet fish’s..

i can’t thank you guys enough for all this info =)

Lou,

If you purchased the compact florescent bulb you better be very careful using it. And I hope it is a new bulb ...not a used one , unless you have a meter to measure with you need to make sure it is new and actually emitting UVB.

Read this article about compact UVB bulbs
Special UV report

It is ercommended that you use a tube style florescent bulb. but there are ways to use a compact safely.

Let me know if you have any problems...

when posting a link ...it can be done easily by using the link feature...in your post it will look like this without the spaces ( if I eliminate the spaces it won’t display properly as an example)

[ link ] website pasted here... [/link ]

The brackets will be inserted automatically if you just click LINK and END LINK

I saw the bulb ...it is the compact ...did you read the article I pasted up ??

The new version of this bulb comes with instructions on how to use it safely...burn in for the first ten days or 105 hours... and distance should be increased to more than 12" IMO . They are very strong lights when first out of the box. Do not use a chrome reflector....paint it white or black if you have to.
Reflectors cause the High UV to be bounced off and all over the place, and into the lizards’s eyes.

If you experience any type of eye closing or odd behavior pertaining to the lizard ...turn it off or remove it from the enclosure and burn in for the required time away from the lizard...

Allowing the lizard to get UVB every other day or so will not hurt the lizard...and this will allow you to burn the lamp in away from the lizard on the days away from it.

I used mine for a short time until my other MVB arrived in the mail.

Please study the site I gave you ...and here is more to read about as I highly recommend MEGA RAY

If and when you can, I suggest getting a different light ...like this

Link

Or this...Zoo med 10.0 tube style...

Link

As I said before ...natural sun will substitute if you can get a proper set up outside...bird cages work well.

FWIW, I switched to the Mega Ray 100W and 160W bulbs about a year ago and will never go back.

They last longer, plain and simple. And unlike normal UVB bulbs where the UVB output dies off over time. The Mega Rays maintain their UVB output a lot longer, I was told by a local breeder that they are good for 12 months, but according to their website there are people getting 18 months out of them. As apposed to the 6 months max you will get out of the tube style bulb.

not sure if anyone answered your question, but you can use both your heat lamp and your UVB at the same time. the UVB doesnt produce heat unless you get a mega ray. its a combo heat/uvb bulb. a bit pricy but i have heard all good remarks on them.

deff gonna need a new cage fast. my simon was just a tad bit bigger than money when i put her in the 6ft h x 4ft long x 3ft wide cage. then when i had my little male ru, he was a lot smaller than money and he went in there with her after his quaratine. it was hard to find him at first, but he had his favorite spots. mom and i would open the doors and stand back and look for a min or 2, then we’d find him. RIP Ru

but i just skimmed over everything. anything else let us know!

how are you doing? everyone has lots of good advice. don’t be overwhelmed. these are highly specialized creatures and the general pet market doesn’t know enough about them - pet stores usually always get their care wrong.

i have to ask you about the bump on his snout. can you get us some pictures of his snout so we can see it better?

 Meet "Money"

thanks for all the helpful replys !! im thinking im going to have to buy that other uvb you recommended because i didn’t really have time to read that other article i’ve been pretty busy but its does sound like a hastle also i don’t want to risk my baby getting hurt. i will read the article tho when i get the chance. for now i have been putting him by my windowsill and letting him take in some sun, there is a window screen up which i have read takes up some of the suns uvb ..

im in the works of moving my studio to another location so i should be freeing up a lot of space in my house, and when i do i will work on getting him a bigger space. i would really love to make a diy project, but i will have to read in to that more also. and yea i do notice that he’s always trying to claw out of fish tank and his nose does rub on the glass, i try to take him out as much as possible when he gets like that.

i used to have a different type of bedding that was edible and had calcium that the ppl at the pet store recommended but i ran out and used my snakes bedding =/ i know that wasn’t the best thing since he probably has swallowed some of the wood chips along with the crx. but i will change it asap.

heres a pic of his snout i took today while he was running around in my closet lol

can’t see the bump on his snout with this picture, but are his nostrils covered with dry skin? could be an injury or an abscess.
