 Quick Gut Loading Question

Hi,

I think i have this gut loading thing understood - but wanna just check :-)

Gizmo is eating medium crickets at the moment, I have been feeding them on carrot and a little apple today, also they have had some courgette... Are these all ok to gut load...

I read if i am gut loading then i shouldnt also dust with calcium and vitamin suppliment, or is this just if i gut load with the bug grub stuff?

Thanks,

Psinic.

 Quick Gut Loading Question

You SHOULD still calcium/supplement dust your crickets lightly even though they are being gut loaded simply because they will still have insufficient amounts of calcium in their diet. I seperate the crickets, at least 24 hrs., before gut loading into a container with no food/water. Then I know they will be hungry for more nutrious gut loading foods; which I allow them to consume for about 24 hrs. before feeding to my rep’s. If you google "how to gutload crickets" they mention a high calcium chicken egg laying mash for it is high in calcium. Personally, I use ground up dog chow for substrate layer with fresh fuit and veggies added to top layer.

That sounds like a huge task. I just keep my crix & worms in 10 gals and feed them an orange for water, and "monster diet" a commercial gutloader.

Anything you do to provide a good diet for the crickets will in turn benefit the lizard...any greens and left over veggies will be beneficial...I have many types of lizards they also eat the greens ...so I have lots of leftovers to feed the worms and crickets...and roaches. I have not yet used a commercial feeding product for insects ...there are to many good natural FREE/CHEAP items to give. Dry Cat food crushed or blended is a good one ...99 cent / dollar store for a box. Much more nutritious than the garbage they get in the wild...

Yes , as mentioned before ...do dust the crickets just before feeding..baggie and shake and bake method works well. The calcium dust will stick to the crickets for a period of time, after awhile it will rub off as the crickets run loose in the enclosure should the dragon not eat them. Re-collect them for another time.
