Just a few questions
1.Would a 50 gallon tank be fine for 1 for its entire life? 2. Do they need a pool or something in their tank since they are called water dragons or would baths be fine? 3.Where is the best place to buy them from(babies preferably)? Thank you so much for those who respond. |

2) Yes, they absolutely need a pool. I would recommend one with a little water pump or waterfall to circulate the water. When you first introduce the water dragon to it he/she will probably study it for a while. It’s kind of funny and cute. The moving water will help them get shed skin off quickly. You’ll need to change the water constantly too because it’ll be used as a toilet. Constantly means daily for a young growing one. When I had an Aussie I found that he would wake up with a bath in the early morning and then take a second bath right before bed. Since he was in my room I’d wake up to the sound of him splashing about in the morning. As soon as I looked at him he’d stop, but if I looked away he’d start splashing again. They will also submerge themselves in the water if they feel threatened or feel like sleeping underwater (nostrils will be above water when sleeping). 3) When I had one he came from a dealer on Kingsnake.com. I had tried to get one from Agama International but they were out. I’m not sure if they’re still operating or not since the owner sadly passed away. Some independently owned pet stores will periodically stock AWD’s or can order them for you. Some online pet stores also will ship AWD’s, but be sure to do it when the weather isn’t excessively hot or doesn’t get too cold. The AWD will be quite disturbed from shipping and they all have an initial trust period normally. It took mine a week just to start moving about if I was in the room, another week to start moving if I was looking at him, and another week to take food from my hand or eat in front of me. Then he was pretty calm and inquisitive...he even deliberately interrupted me a few times to see what I was doing. A note of caution: water dragons, in general, are very fragile animals. One mistake is all it takes to seriously screw things up. Believe me, I know. Even the best vets can’t always fix your mistakes because medicines have their own side effects that can be just as bad as what you’re trying to cure. Locate your nearest reptile vet and have extra cash sitting aside. There are also all sorts of things that can go wrong in which you have no control over. A young water dragon is very high maintenance compared with other agamids, in my opinion. You may want to seriously consider a bearded dragon. |
