 Just a few questions

Hi, I looking into getting another lizard in a couple of months and I have recently been very interested in water dragons. Australian mostly. I have a few questions that I cant really find the answers to on google.
1.Would a 50 gallon tank be fine for 1 for its entire life?
2. Do they need a pool or something in their tank since they are called water dragons or would baths be fine?
3.Where is the best place to buy them from(babies preferably)?
Thank you so much for those who respond.

 Just a few questions

I HAVE BEEN DOING MY RESEARCH OK SO CALM DOWN PLEASE!Sorry if I come off rude but it drives me insane when people accuse others of something when they don’t know the full story. The only reason I asked about the 50 gallon was because a care sheet I found on THIS WEBSITE. I do know of Kingsnake.com and check it practically every day just to see whats out their. Only thing is I’m not seeing any Australians for sale like the ones I have seen when I looked them up on google. Now I don’t know if those on Kingsnake are just juveniles or not. Once again I am sorry if I came off rude. Next time try asking the person if they have done research first.

 Just a few questions

1) A 50 gallon tank would be enough for a baby. However, it would only last for a couple of months. The water dragon would quickly outgrow it and have trouble just turning around or keeping itself entertained. You’d constantly have to bring the little one out of the cage so he/she could get a proper amount of exercise and interaction. I would not recommend a 50 gallon at all.

2) Yes, they absolutely need a pool. I would recommend one with a little water pump or waterfall to circulate the water. When you first introduce the water dragon to it he/she will probably study it for a while. It’s kind of funny and cute. The moving water will help them get shed skin off quickly. You’ll need to change the water constantly too because it’ll be used as a toilet. Constantly means daily for a young growing one. When I had an Aussie I found that he would wake up with a bath in the early morning and then take a second bath right before bed. Since he was in my room I’d wake up to the sound of him splashing about in the morning. As soon as I looked at him he’d stop, but if I looked away he’d start splashing again. They will also submerge themselves in the water if they feel threatened or feel like sleeping underwater (nostrils will be above water when sleeping).

3) When I had one he came from a dealer on Kingsnake.com. I had tried to get one from Agama International but they were out. I’m not sure if they’re still operating or not since the owner sadly passed away. Some independently owned pet stores will periodically stock AWD’s or can order them for you. Some online pet stores also will ship AWD’s, but be sure to do it when the weather isn’t excessively hot or doesn’t get too cold. The AWD will be quite disturbed from shipping and they all have an initial trust period normally. It took mine a week just to start moving about if I was in the room, another week to start moving if I was looking at him, and another week to take food from my hand or eat in front of me. Then he was pretty calm and inquisitive...he even deliberately interrupted me a few times to see what I was doing.

A note of caution: water dragons, in general, are very fragile animals. One mistake is all it takes to seriously screw things up. Believe me, I know. Even the best vets can’t always fix your mistakes because medicines have their own side effects that can be just as bad as what you’re trying to cure. Locate your nearest reptile vet and have extra cash sitting aside. There are also all sorts of things that can go wrong in which you have no control over. A young water dragon is very high maintenance compared with other agamids, in my opinion. You may want to seriously consider a bearded dragon.

 Just a few questions

Well all I have to say is THANK YOU! I have decided that since I am involved in some after school activities that I do not have the time to worry about the water and what not. I am not saying that I do not have time for a reptile just not a water dragon. So dose anyone have any recommendations on what lizard to get. I can take care of it on a daily basis but not any thing like changing a whole pool of water. I am looking for something around bearded dragon size or a little bigger. I have looked at bearded dragons as well. I already have a mac snow Leo which Ive had for 4 months. So I do have some experience. Thanks again

Sorry about the care sheets around here. They are probably a bit dated, I haven’t checked in many years. Maybe someone should? Ya, waterdragons require alot of care. A beardie can be a fun choice IMO.

well recently I have found something called a jeweld lacerta. They get to about 2 foot. It was love at first sight. I absolutly adore these animals. Cant find many caresheets though. The only real one I have found is the one on Agama International where I discovered the lizard. So if anyone has any advice or any sites where care sheets can be found please help. Thanks.
