 A suprise!

So today, I was running my weekly trip to the pet store for a rat, and something struck my eye. A beautiful baby wcd. i just had to have it lol. so i picked up a light and eco earth for it. I’m hopefully going to the store tomorrow to pick up some fake plants. I have a big water bowl for it and this weekend i’m getting a compact uv heat light thing. Right now it’s roaming all over its cage and exploring he seems healthy. Nice thick legs and tail. its a fast lil bugger too lol.

the only pic i have now, more to come soon :)

try going to a hobby store to buy greenery there. silk plants are way less expensive and you get more for your money :)

just a thought!

Haha I just noticed that lol.
Yeah I was planning on buying some silk ones.
I have a question, how many crickets will it eat a day? and how many it will eat when it’s an adult?

first thingg to say about crickets is dont let them roam in the enclosure at night cuz they are vicious lil things and may bite at your lil guy while he trys to sleep.

back to your question. depends on the size of the crickets. i would say 1/4 to 1/2 inch crickets 3-5 2 times a day or even 3 times a day while he is very small.up to 15 or more while he is growing. as many as he will eat in a 15 min period of time. offer greens in a dish. collard greens are great they have high calcium.

what i do is i set up a small tank, 20 gallon tank and toss crickets in after i put the dragon in. that way i dont worry about crix wandering around my house and the enclosure he sleeps in. but some may not take to this cuz the stress of moving to a new tank may disturb him

dont bother with meal worms they dont have enough gut to them and to much shell to them to be of any benefit to your dragon.

wax worms are a nice treat you can get those in the fridge section at your pet store.

i simply feed my guys how many they will eat in a 10-15 min period of time. when they were younger i offerd 2-3 times a day smaller amounts. if they eat to much they can vomit so dont just toss 30 crickets at them and watch them pig out :)

Okay 2 times a day. That doesn’t sound so bad. Now is it going to be tough getting it to eat veggies since its just a baby? Yeah I’ve the basics down on not leaving food. I have two leopard geckos also and a ball python. I will get more up as soon as a can :)
Thanks for everything! :D

well, most of the time they won’t eat their veggies - even adults, but try anyway. get a good UVB light tube, not coil, vitamins without D3, keep up the humidity and warmth.

Also I wouldn’t get a compact uvb. Unless they have fixed them, they are harming reptiles. And a baby really shouldn’t be on eco earth. Get some repti carpet or simply use paper towels. The eco earth can accidentally be digested and cause impaction, or can get into his lil eyes and cause an infection. And if you get waxworms, remember the key word is treat. They are full of fat and almost nothin else, so just an occasional treat. You can usually find small supers at like Petco or Petsmart, those would be a great addition to the crickets.

Good luck with your lil guy, and check out Tricia’s Water Dragon Page for all kinds of good info!!

Well I meant one of these lights. Link

Okay then...I’ll have to get it out.
Mmhmm I know about wax worms...I’ll have to travel 45 min to the next city which is Birmingham to get those. The pet store here only has meal worms and crickets. But other than that thank you again for all the help.

I had planned on getting a tokay gecko and naming it Diablo Azul which is blue devil lol. But the water dragon caught my eye instead. It’s so funny too, it loves to run and climb, and stares at me and turns its head. Its so adorable! And once its gets up in size my dad and I are building him a 6ft cage. Those are pretty cute names. I love Jing Jing. I’m going to look up Chinese baby names lol.

enchanting, aren’t they? i just got one for the same reason--they’re just the cutest things i ever saw! (i’ve seen some really cute beardies, too.) so i brought my little stewie home saturday. he needs fattening up, too. he’s 3 years old, but TINY. stewie eats annie’s iggy salad; i was surprised but happy. i just gave him a tiny mound of it and some really chopped watermelon, and he’s eaten most of it two days in a row now. i don’t think he’s crazy about the watermelon; he seems to leave all that. i would think it would be fine to at least make some finely chopped veggies available. it’s probably easier to get them to eat them as babies than it would be to introduce an adult to veggies.

FYI, mealies and crx are fine as starters. I find, that if you add mealies to shredded collards they will accidently ingest the collard greens with the mealies. Mine (I have 7 now) seem to actually enjoy the collards now, but only if there are mealies mixed in. It is true, you don’t want to feed strictly mealies - too much chitin, which could lead to impaction. And please skip the waxies! They are nothing but fat, much like candy to your dragon. They tend to get addicted to them and refuse to eat other stuff.

Meanwhile, look online and try to order some silkies, they are so healthy and full of calcium. You can also get lots of other bugs online.

well, that’s good. an occasional mealie and collard salad will be good for stewie’s calcium intake, too.
