 Lights and heat

Hi Guys,

Me again :-) I have given Gizmo a new Viv which is much bigger than the silly little one the pet shop sold me for him! It’s about 4 feet heigh, 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep. He is only little at the moment so it’s nice and big for him. There is a real potted ficus in it, and lots of fake vines etc. Bamboo, and braches and he loves climbing and diving in his pond. All in all he seems much happier, and greener which is wierd... About 2/3’s of the way up the back there is a shelf and it is on here that i have setup his basking spot.

Now my question is - since i have put him in the new Viv (about 4 days now), i haven’t seen him in the basking spot once. he can deffinately climb and reach it, as at night his favourite sleeping spot is on a branch right next to the shelf. The temps seem all right, 90 in the basking spot, between 80 and 85 in the rest of the Viv, dropping to between 70 and 75 at night - the heat lamp for the basking spot is controlled by a dimming thermostat. Should I be worried that he isn’t basking - the basking spot currently is just a wooden shelf with nothing on it, could this be a factor?

Also his UVB is ceiling mounted 5.0. This throws out a nice amount of light but during the day he seems to spend alot of time in the shaded bottom areas of his Viv, playing in the plants and wood etc. Should i clear some of this up to allow more UVB to break through?

Thanks,

Psinic.

sounds like a nice viv. give him some time to get used to his new home. he’s probably in the shaded area for security.

Ya, I agree. You might also try upgrading to a 10.0 for this size viv and adding some repticarpet to the shelf.
