so the baby needs meat, and he can’t only have crix and mealies, because of digestibility. so last night we were cooking steak, and i cut some (raw) into teeny tiny strips, and got stewie out. i tapped him softly on the nose and the little mouth opened right up, i popped a tiny piece of meat in and he closed his mouth and reallized it was full of meat and ate it right down. he slowed down after a few bites, so i used the tip of my little finger to poke it a little further in, and he’d try to bite me, again realize his mouth was full of meat, and eat it. i took the slowing down to mean he was full, though. he probably ate, total, a portion of meat maybe the size of a small marble, but i figure he has a teeny tummy. when he was finished i put him in his pond and moved his basking bulb right over it, and he just laid in there looking content for a long time before he went into his house and went to sleep. his color is a lot better. he was nearly brown when i brought him home, but he’s nice and green now. so i had to call annie and tell her how adorable he was, in case she hadn’t noticed it in her own water dragons, lol! she says he can have chicken, too--i just need to be consciencious about calcium, since he won’t be eating mice. i was in SUCH a bad mood when i got home, but i was smiling and happy by the time i finished feeding my new baby! jesse |

However, the vet did say not to do this on a regular basis. When eating whole food prey (fish, rodents, etc.) they get the nutrients from the organs, bones, etc. We just didn’t want to advertise this, b/c we were afraid that all the newbies would start feeding meat to dragons on a regular basis and not do the whole food prey anymore. Which brings me to my next point. How about frozen/thawed rodents? You can buy them from the pet store already frozen. |

just remember, the bones and cartalidge (sp) in the pinkies gives the calcium. and as Annie pointed out to me once, the raw meat products do not, therefore i would keep up with the calcium on that. |

what i’m reading says water dragons don’t actually need to be fed every day, though i am with stewie right now because he’s so bony. i’m also hand-feeding him his meat, because it’s fun--i did have to use hemostats to touch the worm. i managed to feed him chopped-up nightcrawler last night, and i know they’re good calcium. also, presumably they have some sort of organs. i have crickets and mealies, but i know those can’t be real often because of digestibility. and lucky for me, he seems to like veggies, too. i’m using the same vitamin/calcium mixture i use for my iguanas, but i have straight calcium besides. no d3 because they make their own and i know they can od on it. he has a good UVB. rotten little darling thing! why couldn’t he just be a veggiesaurus like my igs? jesse |

Believe me, you will get over the "EWWWW" factor soon, lol! When I first got my ’lil babycakes Charlie over 6 years ago, she was so sickly. I didn’t know much, and I didn’t know to go to the internet to ask. Eventually, I had to move. I had to stay temporarily at a friend’s house, and I left Charlie in another friend’s care. I refused to feed pinkies, ever. But Leslie thought otherwise. By the time I got Charlie back living with me, she was hooked on f/t pinkies. No, you don’t just leave them in the dish - altho my awd Lola prefers that. You use the tongs and do the "pinky" dance, lol! Just wiggle it and wiggle it and eventually they can’t resist. As far as the price, yes the dragons are expensive to care for. With my crew, I either raise mouse and rat babies, or I buy them in bulk online. Pinkies should be fed once or twice a week. Adult dragons only are fed every other day or so, or less in the winter. Juvies are fed daily, and babies several times per day. It varies with the dragon and situation of course. Nightcrawlers are good, and thank goodness I have never had to cut one up!! Gross! Crx and mealies can be fed fairly often, along with any veggies accepted. Fruits need to be a treat due to the sugar content. Waxies are a rare treat, a no-no in my book. |

i’m kind of treating him like an adolescent because of his size. i do feed him every day. he gets veggies in the morning with the igs. he likes them, too. i read all this about water dragons being stubborn about veggies, but he’s real good. then when i come home from work (about 5:30) i feed him a little bit of meat. once a week isn’t bad for pinkies--it wouldn’t completely break me. i just got a new job (same department kylie) paying me more money. i start monday, so that’s a great thing. even IF i ever give in and try pinkies, i am NOT squooshing them. jesse |

i dont see much wrong with feeding him like you would the younger ones. we feed the younger ones so much so they can gain the weight and grow. but ive been told to feed them when they want to eat and as much as they want to, just dont let them get over weight. yea i squooshed one once...it was gross. lol |
