Oh that poor little guy..Hats off to you for taking him....Try and get some meat & veggie baby food and put it in a syringe or eye dropper and see if you can’t get him to take some..just put a drop on his nose maybe he will start licking it.....might even get some pedilyte (sp) and give that to him and make sure your temps stay up.... not too warm tho...

You know not to scare you or anything but most likely he may have parasites too...there is an over the counter worm med that you can get for reptiles it’s called Worm Guard by Nature Zone...I use it and it’s not harsh like the other wormers...you can find in most pet stores....

Well good luck with your new little one..and keep us posted...and if you need any help just yell......

Worm Guard is almost the same as parazap..it has the two main ingredients...Wormwood & Black Walnut...The main thing is too keep them very hydrated during the treatment...these wormers will dehydrate them....So lots of baths and fluids....

the first day he ate 6 crickets. when I put him in the feeder tub I have. not seen him eat anything since. but I have put 5-6 crickets a day in the cage. I would put more in but I see 2-3 without looking. also put a second big plastic tub in with a 5gal heater. built up rocks around it so he cant touch it even thou it wont burn him.he is very active for about 1-2 hours in the mourning and night rest of the time just chills out looking around.

my baby stewie looooves mealworms. they’re high in chitin, so don’t give him lots, but they might get him interested. i use waxworms as a treat, too. no chitin, so easy to digest, but they’re really high fat. as skinny as your little guy is right now he could probably have a couple a day or every other day without harm. probably not more, though, because of how rich they are.

if you can get them, silkworms are just about perfect, but you have to order them online, and they’re delicate little buggers. i also do some superworms and nightcrawlers. nightcrawlers are high protein and high in calcium, and they like ’em, but they’re super-easy to digest so you risk the runs with too many. superworms seem to be the candy of the worm world, as far as my lizards are concerned. right now yours is probably too small for them. i have my WD and a beardie and i’ve gone more toward worms as they’ve gotten less interested in crix.

stewie would never eat in a feeding tub. i had to just put the crix in his cage and make sure there was enough veggie food in there so if they got hungry before he got to them, they wouldn’t bite him. it’s good if you can get him to eat some veggies, too. stewie eats turnip and collard greens, iggy salad Link and a frozen veggie mix of cut green beans, peas, and snap-pea stir fry (chopped up real fine). a lot of WD’s aren’t much for veggies, but if you can get him started early on them, it will help him be healthier.

wow! that’s a lot of crix for a starving baby. probably why he’s not eaten since. be careful not to over feed otherwise you can really overwhelm his system.

one of our basic husbandry rules is not to keep live food in with your dragon - reasons - when the bugs get hungry, they will eat your dragon and crix have a tendency to scare dragons if left in the cage.

a baby, like yours, should be eating twice a day. only give him 1 or 2 crix at a feeding until his system gets used to getting food - a week or 2.

be consistent with your feedings times so he becomes confident that he gets to eat everyday.

lots of dragons will not eat greens so don’t be too worried about that.

Awwww, what a cute ’lil guy! He is thin, but his thighs look good so it is probably due in part to a growth spurt. Don’t do waxies, that is a common misconception trying to fatten up skinny dragons. They can easily get addicted to them (pure fat, no nutrition) and refuse other food items, and/or they can get fatty liver disease.

Feed him all he wants, offer twice a day for now. He cannot and will not overeat. You can also slice up collard greens into tiny slivers and mix them up with some mealies in a small bowl. They accidently ingest the greens while shooting for the worms, and discover they enjoy the greens!

Please call your local vet and ask about the cost of bringing in a fecal sample. It should cost less than $15. Then if he does have parasites, which he probably does, you can either allow your vet to sell you the pre-mixed meds (probably panacur) or you can go to beautiful dragons dot com and order some yourself. Be aware that you need to weigh him somehow. You can get postal scales for less than $25 in many places and this is a good investment. Either go online, to Ebay, or direct to the post office. Actually, beautiful dragons dot com offers a lot of good stuff, so you might choose to peruse that site, lol!

Congratulations, and good luck! I think he looks wonderful! He is probably a bit stressed, and he will start to eat less if developing a parasitic load. Oh, and make sure to administer proper calcium supplementation as one of those pics showed a bit of a knobby knee or elbow I guess. He will be fine under your good care!!!!

dunno, he looks really thin like he’s not been fed well. i would feed gently so that he doesn’t become impacted to be on the safe side.

to clarify about overeating: obesity is a problem in all captive animals. lizards do and will get fat by overeating and it a problem. --- this does not apply to you and your situation:)

keep us posted!!

Aw, such a bobble-head, which makes him look even thinner! I don’t what size crx you have been offering him so I couldn’t begin to advise as to if it is too much or not enough. Only older adults usually tend to get overweight, so I wouldn’t worry about that. At his age you want him to eat all he can. If you do notice him not "pooping" on a regular basis you can administer a few drops of mineral oil to help that along.

Yep, silkies are among one of the best nutritional food items to offer. I would also offer supers, crx, mealies in collards, but no waxies at this point.

You didn’t mention, but are you intending to get a fecal done? I would highly advise that, in spite of ordering para-zap or worm-guard. The whole "new home" thing is so huge of a stressor that you would rather be safe than sorry.

Impaction occurs when there is a blockage in the intestines, such as too much chitin (exoskeletons from crx, supers and mealies mostly) or another obstruction such as an ingested item from your home. Mama42 had problems with her dragon ingesting stuff her kids left on the floor. I once found my Wilbur (now nearly six) on a throw on a chair. He seemed attached to that throw, literally, so I inspected further and found that he had ingested part of the fringe thinking it was a worm I guess. I pulled it out, and out, and out! Wow! Poor baby!

Anyway, the biggies for you right now are to ensure proper temps, humidity levels, hydration, good and adequate nutrition and a fecal sample taken to the vet.

Wow, Jerri, guess you have an exception! My appologies! I have only had dragons for 7 years, and I keep my adults lean and mean, so to speak. Kinda like that one dragon who lived to be 18. I did have direct ongoing contact with the owner, just to get an idea of his methodology.

An overweight juvi, wow, maybe you should get him some more exercise or something? Just a thought, lol. Sorry, I hope you take this in a positive manner, don’t mean to insult anybody.

well time for an update. have some sad and good news for both me and little greeny. I toke him to the vet yesterday to get him checked out for his nose and to get a fecal done. well the vet started checking him out and found out where he had the bad nose rub he had all but broken his lower jaw. said that was probably why he had not eaten since the first day that it was hurting him, we both agreed that that was probably to much for me being a new water dragon owner to be able to handle.

OK that’s the bad news for me and him. at that point I had given up was not going to get another dragon.
now for the good new. she actually help out sometimes at a vet school. to help with teaching about reptile care. so she is taking little greeny to the school to let them help him get better. and if he does they will give me a call to be able to get him back. free of charge for the medical care and all.

and on another good note for me she knew a guy that breeds Chinese water dragons, so today I’m getting a good healthy baby from the get go. ill make a new thread when he shows up today to show off the new baby.

Well that really did work out - you saved a baby dragon, he will have the best care possible, plus you have found yourself a breeder!! I am dying to hear about the breeder and see your new little one!
