 Question about sick water dragon

I took in a very sick water dragon about a week ago.I was told by the person i got it from told me it had got dirt in its eye. both eyes where closed and it was really thin. I took it to a local vet( somewhat knowledgeable) the closes reptile vet is 1 1/2 hour drive. Vet said it was dehydrated. So i have been giving it long warm baths, Jump-start, Tobramycin eye drops and .1ml baytril all 2Xday. As I’ve been putting the eye drops in I’ve noticed a white build up over the eyes. this build up has slowly come out of its eyes. I can now actually see it eyes. It is starting to perked up a bit what I’m asking is, is there anything else i could do to help put weight on it and do y’all think it will ever see again.

 Question about sick water dragon

Hi

Welcome to the WaterDragon forum.

I’m not very knowledgable on the meds so I’ll leave that to one of the others who has more experience.

I can however help you other aspects of your WD’s health, tank set up, diet and general behavours.

The fact that you’re starting to see a difference is a good sign :)

Firstly, how old is the WD? is it a hatchling, a juvi?, sub-adult or fully grown?
Do you know if it’s male or female? (not that it really matters but it helps to give a better overall picsture)

ohh pictures! Can you take a picture and post it here please? It’s easier for us to help if we can SEE what we’re dealing with.

Can you describe the tank and what’s in it please. (again, pictures are great) lights, heating, temps, size of tank, what it’s made out of. substrate, what the WD was eating. Is it eating now?

We’re here to help, just tell us what we need to know and we’ll do the best we can for you and your new little green friend

TD.x.

 Question about sick water dragon

If you are unaware of the bad UVB lamps out there....I suggest you read the article below. If you have any doubt about your lamp (UVB) I would turn it off for a week or more and see if you get any positive results.
Many of the symptoms you describe can be caused by a bad UVB lamp. Lethargy...lack of appetite...closing the eyes and subsequent irritation.

The irritation is much like being snow blind in humans...the UV rays of the sun burn the eyes without you knowing it and cause a painful experience until you get out of the intense sun for a few days.

For lizards exposed to intense UVB lamps they must be turned off for as long as it takes for them to heal....days - weeks. A few weeks without UVB will not harm them.

Baytril is a highly potent antibiotic...be very careful ...do not overdose....keep the dragon hydrated. Antibiotics often dehydrate reptiles. This is hard on the liver...so make sure he / she has nice white urates (urine) when it goes. Orange or yellow urates indicate dehydration. If it is already dehydrated I would talk to the vet and see if it is OK to hold off on the baytril until hydration improves....

Sometimes eye irritation is just a case of substrate getting in the eye and flushing it, as you would yourself if you had a foreign object in your eye, can help. Flush numerous times per day...Use the drops from the vet ...and if they run out you can use saline solution from the Target / Walmart / Walgreen’s over the counter drugs store. Also at the pet stores they sell TURTLE DROPS...another eye wash. You can flush with the less expensive item ...then treat with the Vet eye drops.
Often times Eco earth or Coco bark gets in the eyes...fine particulates that you can’t even see.

Here is the article about bad UVB lamps and the effects a chrome reflector can have also...
Reptile UV
Look at the terms photo-kerato-conjunctivitis, learn all about it.

Wishing you all the best with your dragon...
