Is This Okay???? My friend works at the Metro Toronto Zoo as the keeper for the Lizards and fish and he has a Full grown WD as a pet at home. He feeds this thing nothing but pinkies. Is this a bad thing or what???

Is This Okay???? Offering only one food item is unhealthy no matter how nutricious it is. Live prey is a good source of protien and calicum, however it’s like you eating only chicken everyday. It’s unhealthy. Your body needs variety same as the water dragon needs variety.

Is This Okay???? I always try to imagine what each reptile would eat if he were in the wild. Baby rodents would seem to be an easily obtainable food source. There are many different opinions on pinkies. If this full grown dragon is healthy and happy with what he is eating I’d commend his owner and leave his diet as is. I wish I could get my dragons to eat a pinky, but they won’t. I think it was Gertie who mentioned on an earlier post that it is the calcium to phosphorous ratio of food sources that are important and even though pinkies are higher in fat, they are better in that ratio than most other sources. There is a very complicated balance at work in reptiles that uses calcium, UVB light and proper temperatures to convert the food sources that they eat into the calcium and nutrients that they require for proper growth. IMO if you are providing the right temps and UVB in their environment and quality gut-loaded insects and prey you probably can dispense with the calcium dust. But you have to religiously gut-load your insects with a balanced diet. Pinkies get their nourishment from mom and I would imagine that a freshly breastfed little pinkie has just about as much nutrition as it is possible to obtain in the wild. Just my opinion.
